Kyokushin uchi deshi?!

Hi,

I was hoping you might be able to answer a question for me: I have after much thought and deliberation decided that after I graduate from university, in 6 months, I would like to fully dedicate myself to training kyokushin karate. Essentially, I want to commit a portion of my life to nothing else but training. This is not a spur of the moment thing either. I have been thinking about this seriously for well over a year. I first was introduced to the concept of the uchi-deshi when I studied judo in high school, and it is something that has stuck with me since. I know that there used to be kyokushin uchi deshi programs but I have been having a hard time finding any information on modern day ones. I have come across one in Russia, India and Sweden – and according to Brain Bastien, an IKO Branch Chief, Australia, South Africa, and Brazil do as well (but I can not find info on them)

I was wondering if you might happen to know anything about uchi deshi programs that are still in existence. I am willing to help out around the dojo…whether it be cleaning up, cooking, answering the phone, taking care of visitors, shopping, doing repairs, opening and closing the dojo, and working on the side to offset any fiscal debt that may be incurred from my stay, etc. In essence, I am willing to do pretty much anything to at least attempt fulfilling this vision – I even thought about moving down to some country, renting a small place, getting a low paying job, and living a spartan-esque lifestyle, all in an attempt of re-creating my own version of a uchi-deshi program.

Any help you might provide is greatly appreciated,

I don't know whether this helps, but if its training in Japan you were after, you could look at see whether you could be accepted on an internship.

I know of a Wado Karate one that the Shiramizu University offer every year. In exchange for teaching English as a foreign language to the students of the university, the intern is trained by the coach of the Shiramizu Karate Club (Takamasa Arakawa) who is a coach to the Japan National Squad.

I Know its not Kyokushin, but maybe there are other High Schools / Unis that offer this with Kyokushin as their style.

Are you currently training in a Kyokushin dojo? If so, you should talk with your instructor, and see if he can get you lined up with some of the names that you have mentioned, or someone who knows them, or somewhere down the line. From there, you should be able to learn something about it.

I agree with Bushido_man, you will need a Letter of introduction to the Dojo Sensei that you'll be Uchi Deshi for.

If you go through your Country Organisation or if you get stuck (not too sure where you're from)
