unknownstyle Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 the bunkai is just a interpratation, bunkai is whatever you make it. that is the art in all of this. if you practice only what your teacher shows you, you will become stagnent and not ever truly understand anything until you explore the technique. go through your forms and try to invision different ways to use the techniques and you will have a much deeper richer knowledge of them "Live life easy and peacefully, but when it is time to fight become ferocious."
Gyte Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 SO does anyone know why they made the heians from the pinans?...or was it the same thing when the Japanese changed the named from Passai to Bassai? The reason why the Heian katas were created from the Pinan katas, was so that they would fit to the specific style of Shotokan Karate. That means longer stances, more powerfull movements. Likewise most of the stances of neko ashi dachi where changed into kokutsu dachi, the shiko dachi were changed into kiba dachi, some front kicks where replaced by side kicks, etcetra.Due to these changes the bunkai may have changed also. But as earlier pointed out the bunkai is just the interpretation of the kata. You are free to interpret the kata as you would like. "Practising karate means a lifetime of hard work."~Gichin Funakoshi
