I think there are instances where you have to do what you have to do. Of course, you should do whatever you can to legitimize your belts.

In regards to this statement here, I think it is important to emphasize that training shouldn't always be about the next testing, or earning the next belt. Instead, concentrate on the quality of what you are learning, and work with it in different applications. Really pick it apart, and put back together, then start back at the bottom, and work your way back up. Rank isn't so much what is important, as is what and how you learn. Since you won't be stuck in a curriculum while self-training, spend time to focus on what you think will help you the most.
