I've taken one written test for an art at bb level.

It wasn't a bad idea, essay and all. But I think that most of that informatin is sufficiently convayed verbally during the course of testing.

Still, I don't see a problem with doing it.

For BB I had some short answer questions and several essays questions, though they were short essays. I am unsure about writing requirements for dan tests. Hopefully, I'll found out within the next year or so.

We have oral tests during promotions over terminology, famous teachers, and "What does....mean to you?"

I don't know if a written test should be mandatory, but reading and learning about karate history, philosophy, and such is invaluable to anyone holding dan rank.
