Hmm ... I need to fight the urge to ask too many questions LOL.

I would like to ask about early karate techniques and tactics books and which modern books goes into karate techniques and tactics that are used today.

What about body hardening excersices of the past and how modern body hardening excersices have evolved from the early centuries ?

I would appreciate if this is kept an old fashioned hardcore karate thread. :karate:

Wonder Okinawa is a great source.

The kata, when done correctly, can also be used as a conditioning tool.

See http://www.wonder-okinawa.jp/023/eng/011/index.html

Other tools were used too, and still are, such as the makiwara board.

See http://www.wonder-okinawa.jp/023/eng/012/index.html

Wonder Okinawa is a great source.

. . . the makiwara board.

See http://www.wonder-okinawa.jp/023/eng/012/index.html

This had an excellent video. I liked seeing the "true" makiwara being used, instead of what I'd bought and battered my hands and forearms against in the past.

I'd bought two makiwara boards, cut the backboard of one so the two would join together against a beam in the wall, and did strong hand and forearm strikes against it. The sheetrock all around cracked like mad from the vibrations, and the repeated impact even injured a small bone in the palm heel, at the base of the thumb. There was simply no "give" to what I had, and they're still sold in the catalogs today as they were yesterday. I learned to strike palm heels with the base of the knife hand side of my hand, so I never injured that small bone again, and I still hit BOB in the sternum with that hybrid knife hand-palm heel strike, but I'd love to be able to use the makiwara shown in the video.

That's one thing that a lot of people miss out on: makiwara boards need to give. That way, not only does it not break your hand hitting it, it also gets you to punch through your target to move it, rather then stopping at the target (unless of course, you're going to smash walls).

I don't own a lot of Karate books, but I am waiting for some to come in from Dragon Times by Cook. They won't be old books, but the history in them should be accurate. Funakoshi's Karate-Do Kyohan dates to 1973, but anything older than that may only be available in Japanese.

Are you speaking of this book ?

http://mmabooks.blogspot.com/search/label/Karate

I found this MMA blog and the karate section is pretty thin. The book by Funakoshi is pretty good. I need to go to the Barnes & Nobles store to buy the book, after Christmas when I get caught up on the bills.

Any more early karate texts I should buy also karate techniques and tactic books I should buy also, What books are a must in any good karate library ? :karate:

What is it you are looking for Karatefighter?

I mean apart form a good book to read.

If you really want to learn Karate, join a club and start to train. You can not possibly experience what real Karate means, until you start this process.

Off course, you have to do your homework first, but it seems you have narrowed it down to traditional Karate as what you want, so the next step (I would suggest) is joining a trad club in your area.

I would go for Shotokan if I were you.

I live no where near a karate club or any type of martial art club. This is why I am studying via home study until I have enough money to move to the big city also I want to have a good understanding of karate before I step into a karate club. :karate:

Unless you live on the North Pole (or Alaska) I bet there is an MA club within 20 miles of you.
