Blade13 Posted July 4, 2002 Posted July 4, 2002 Yeah, Ive seen it a few times. Its not a favorite of mine though Theres a lot of stupid stuff in it. Some great fight scenes though.
KickChick Posted September 5, 2002 Posted September 5, 2002 I was just reading about the feud beteen Steven Seagal and his former partner, Jules Nasso. Nasso filed a breach of contract suit against Seagal last March charging the star had reneged on a four-picture deal. On June 4, Nasso was one of 17 men arrested along with Peter Gotti, older brother of the late John Gotti and now acting head of the Gambino crime family. Nasso was charged with "conspiracy to commit extortion" and "extortion of an individual in the film industry." Last week, a writer for Vanity Fair, Ned Zeman, ( who wrote long abusive article, "Seagal Under Siege," runs in the October issue )-... was confronted on his way home by a driver who pulled up alongside his car shining a flashlight. The man pointed a pistol at Zeman, pulled the trigger and said, "Bang . . . Stop what you're doing! The article Zeman wrote in Vanity Fair said (among other things), "Seagal's film career is in a death spiral, thanks in part to his vile, simian behavior toward colleagues, women, employees, and reporters - not to mention his serial dissembling, his dime-store theology, and his all-around vulgarism." This guys story raises questions about Seagal's prowess as a martial artist, and how stuntman Gene LeBell once choked Seagal unconscious during an aikido demonstration, and how Seagal ducked a bout with champion black belt Bob Wall, who promised to rip off his head and defecate down his neck. "With each misstep, from 'The Glimmer Man' (1996) to 'Fire Down Below' (1997), Seagal became a bigger liability, his waistline increasing, his hairline retreating," Zeman reports. "When Warner Bros. put him on a strict diet and supplied him with a trainer, they found cookie crumbs on the fitness equipment." Seagal is now working with Danny Provenzano, great nephew of late Teamsters boss Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano. Danny is set to go on trial this month in New Jersey on 44 racketeering counts connected to that other great crime family, the Genoveses.
OldRookie Posted September 8, 2002 Posted September 8, 2002 Jet Li's very fast; also Donnie Yen is awsome though not well known here. He has done tons of films in Hong Kong,Thailand,ect..He trained at the same school in Wushu as Jet. Chuck Norris-he's up in his 50's now but I wouldn't mess with him. Richard Norton:starred with Cynthia Rothrock in a lot of "B" kung fu films in the '90s-had a lot of talent--at least on the screen. *1st Dan Oct 2004*"Progress lies not enhancing what is, but in advancing toward what will be.""It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them."
BlackI Posted September 8, 2002 Posted September 8, 2002 Jet Li is very good. I don't know if he is the fastest or the best, but there is no way to take anything away from his abilities. Some of my picks are Michael Jai White(mentioned earlier), who kicked Van Damsel's butt all over Universal Soliders. Donnie Yen: Who was the Man in Iron Monkey. Iron Monkey 2 sucked, and he had a role in Blade 2. Michelle Yeoh: Lady from Crotching Tiger. Many roles co-starring with Jet Lei. Wesley Snipes- Blade Himself Mark Dacascos-who was great in Brotherhood of the wolf Question Can Neo and Morpheus(Matrix) be considered for this In search of the Temple of Light
Wado Guy Posted September 9, 2002 Posted September 9, 2002 Norris: I'd have to say is legit. AT his age, he is studying ( I believe) with the Machado brothers. Any style of jujitsu is hard enough when your younger, but aggressively pursuing BJJ at his age definitely says something about him and his abilities. Li/Chan/Sammo....all 3 could handle themselves if the situation arose. Van Dam....well....i dunno. He does have some physical attributes. He does have at least some training of sorts (in question as it is). He could handle himself somewhat I guess. Snipes : I'm going to go out on a limb and say that AT FIRST I felt that he was in the same boat as Van Dam. I've never seen him fight outside of the movies. After seeing Blade 2, and reading that he choreographed some of the fights, my mind changed. There was a flow to some of the fights (not the flashy cgi or pro wrestling crap) that only a trained martial artist could understand and pull off. Segal : Say what you will about the man, but he does have a significant amount of training in Aikido. He could handle himself. Joe Son : He made a few appearances in the first Austin Powers flick. If he wears a steel cup at all times, he might could at least survive most encounters.
monkeygirl Posted September 12, 2002 Posted September 12, 2002 I admit that Jet Li has some awesome fight scenes. But when I watch a movie (well, normally anyway) I don't watch it JUST for the fight scenes. I like it to be funny/enjoyable, or at least stupid enough for me to pick fun at. Jet Li's movies are none of these. The action's great, blah blah...but the stories suck. They're just really bad. I MUCH prefer Jackie Chan's movies. He may not have as fancy of fight scenes sometimes (maybe it's because he doesn't use wires..?), but they are always creative, and the storyline is pretty good. Jackie Chan is a goofy guy. The movies may not be Oscar-worthy, but when they're bad, they're stupid enough to make fun of (e.g. "Gorgeous" where his girlfriend was...6 years old). So, it's still entertaining! Van Damme is a girly man. I have a post on that somewhere around here. Segal is kind of boring...although I did like the few scenes from Exit Wounds I saw, and that one where he's in a coma (that's my fave) Snipes...he was okay in that one with Stallone lol i can't remember the name. Blade was pretty good...haven't seen the sequel. The biggest problem with MA films are finding martial artists who can act, or actors who can kick butt. I'd love to change that but I don't think it's gonna happen. 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
omnifinite Posted September 12, 2002 Posted September 12, 2002 Jet Li's movies are none of these. The action's great, blah blah...but the stories suck. They're just really bad. I MUCH prefer Jackie Chan's movies.I agree. I prefer Jackie Chan's action scenes by far. Using wires or special effects just seems to break up the flow of the fight unless it's very important conceptually (and even then it can be weird unless it's done really well... which is what makes me nervous about The Tuxedo ). If he needs wires to make one kick look good maybe he's using the wrong kick... and if he needs to, umm, "stretch" the realm of logic in order to make his fights "work", maybe he needs to rethink the sequence. Jackie Chan's fights usually make sense, no matter how complex they get. And Jackie Chan always has a humbleness that puts you on his side every step of the way. With probably every bone of his body broken at some point... no one can touch his dedication. Plus he's incredibly good to his fans. I love the guy. I'm glad he started working in American movies or I never would have found out who he was. And he probably never would have had the budgets to make his best stuff. 1st Dan HapkidoColored belts in Kempo and Jujitsu
TKDMASTER Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 Chuck Norris= Put him at the top of every list. He has trained with Gracies and Bruce Lee. Stephen Seagal=I really doubt it the guy has not even stayed in shape. Jet Li= The dude is fast, Would probally be good. Jackie Chan= I would say he would be pretty good too. Jean Claude=Decent but not great. Dont know much about other guys.
Fist of Fury Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 Hi Guys, the worst thing about answering this type of question is the truth is always going to burst some poor kids bubble. Jeane Claude Van Damme, a personal friend of Frank Dux : that about sums up his MA carreer...........It has been said it was Frank Dux's (Bloodsport) idea, (who is an expert at making up false fight records), that Van Damme claim he was European Kick boxing champion...........The truth is he did win a few karate points competitions of no real standin but that is as far is he got. Well whatever, it worked and got the guy into the movies and fair play to him.............could Jean Claude make you wish you hadn't called him a fairy?.........Fit guy, not the slowest around and if he caught you smack in the face with that mawashi..........ouch!!..........plus, unless the guy is a total pansy, which I very much doubt, he probaly packs a very good punch. Ok some body guard picked him up and threw him away when he was drunk..............that means nothing. Jackie Chan.............1st Dan in Hapkido and straight into the movies..........Jumped on the Bruce lee band wagon after his death..........the difference was jackie never tried to copy or emulate Bruce...........he went his own way and as bad as his early films were became huge in Hong Kong..............Fighting ability.....about nil to zero...not Jackie's thing at all..............the man is 100% an acrobat and showman........small, not very muscular and certainly not a martial artist in the true sense of the word..........nothing he does would ever work in real life....I'm afraid Jackie would be way at the bottom of my list. Jet Li:...........Jet is the mystery man as he has never had a fight in his life............he hasn't even sparred seriously...........When he was training as a boy he was far too valubale an asset to have messing around in the dojo..........granted the 5 times wushu champion is extrely talented, but a fighter? Nope. never in the creation of man...Jet would be outta there at the first sign of trouble......... the man's beliefs wouldn't allow him to harm anothe human being.......so in Jet's case I'm afraid we'll never know. Don "The Dragon Wilson" Done it all and has already answered the question in the arena. Chuck Norris..........6 times world champion. Absolutely no doubt that he was one of the best MA around in the 60' and 70's along with his good friend and student Joe Lewis.......Handle himself ? you better believe it. Bruce Lee...........I had the pleasure of training with a great JKD fighter namely, Mark Stewart, who trained with Dan Inosanto, who trained with Bruce...............Third hand lies they say, I doubt it in this case....True, we can all get carried away with movie legends but Bruce was the ultimate MA who just happened to make a few movies...........the man, in a way, was a freak......apparently the more muscular he got the faster he got.........The fact WC kick boxer Joe Lewis is hardly famous for praising others, openly stated, "I never stood in front of a faster human being in his life", has got to tell you it all...........His pheonominal speed and amazing upper body strenth made him the Mohammad Ali of MA. Steven Seagal: An absolutely huge man with hands like shovels.......he came to Thailand about 5 months ago for a concert...........when I say huge, I mean huge.............It is true he ran a dojo in Japan, but it belonged to his wife's family not to him........... I am not trying to take anything away from the guys by saying that.........He did reach Aikido to the Jaoanese and was the first foreiner ever to do so..............His rank is 100% genuine and was achieved way before he went back to America or even thought about being a movie star. Initially he worked as a body gurd and taught Aikido before Kelly Le'brok introduced him to the movies. One glimpse of his training movies and any trained MA can see he is a huge talent..............He was the highest paid body guard in Japan and is 100% the real McCoy IMO..........his huge arms and hands are ideal for Aikido and he really can perform about everything he does in his movies.............he is probably the only MA who really cared about what he put on screen....he respects his art and tries hard to show what can be done rather than what can not be done........Admitedly, he recently fell fowl of pressure to use wires in Exit Wounds.............but overall he is the best MA to grace the silver Screen since Bruce died. I would rather face a rougue leephant than upset him..........hamburgers or no hamburgers Samo Hung is a favourite of mine...been around a long long time.........he was a fat slob when he fought Bruce in Han's garden and he's still a fat slob but one helluva good MA........Sammo could mix with the best IMO. Donnie Yen............... ................Geez I'd love ta smack him........... talented MA but a bore full of praise for no one but himself. Hope someone knocks him out then we can all say he can't fight for chit probably a real hard guy though. David Carradine............poor old David never claimed to be a MA...he never stole that part from Bruce....Bruce was never really seriously considered for the part..............Bruce thought he was the man for the job............the producers never but it makes a good story for the Bruce Lee writers. He would struggle in a hand to hand fight but he gets a few pebbles in his hands and watch out.............he can take yer eye out at a hundred paces My Fav. Vinney Jones...........5th degree black belt in gutter snipe Karate LOL he's the tall English guy who was in Snatch with Brad Pitt and 2 smokin barrels......now he is a real hard man...........MA or no MA......Vinney and ex-Wimbledon footballer in England is the hardest man in the movies today............ You have twice as many ears as you have mouths.........A smart man knows why.
Fist of Fury Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 has anyone seen Jet Li's - Black Mask ive only seen the final seen on a ultimate fight scenes dvd Yeah it's very poor bro.........unless you are about 12 the it might appeal......Hitman, My Father's a Hero, the first 3 OUATIC movieand Fist of Legend ate among his better films.........Black Mask was a bit of a flop along with The Master, which was probably his worst ever effort You have twice as many ears as you have mouths.........A smart man knows why.
