Learning from our Students

Do any of you instructors learn from your students?

 

Master Tobias Reece teaches me something new every class I attend.

 

His kata skill far exceeds mine yet I am a National kata champion.

 

How can this be? Well because he loves kata so much he knows more kata than me (I am his instructor).

 

He also knows more Kobudo than me yet I am ranked higher than him, Why?.

 

Because I have graded moe than he as.

 

I know that there are students in all schools that know something their instructors dont yet some instructors are not prepaired to learn from their juniors

 

What are your thoughts?

I currently study Goju Ryu Karate, in which i am a white belt. But i have been in the Martial Arts since i was 6 (now 18). I have never really learned kata before and as i am learning this stuff i find myself teaching the higher ranked students how to fight. You see, my fighting is good but my karate is poor. I have much to show people and the majority seem willing to learn, but u do always come across the odd black belt who thinks that a white belt could have nothing to teach them.

Hi all

 

I am known as a poor kumite fighter. Whenever I referee bouts I always watch the competitors, and observe the techniques that they use. I believe that I can learn many things from my juniors/students, and that other people should as well.

 

Recently, a student joined us who was highly graded in aikido. I have made it clear to him that I am prepared to learn some techniques from him if he feels he wants to teach me.

 

KarateRonin....remember....I learn something new from you in every lesson as well, ranging from how to teach a class to practical aplication of kata.

 

Your karate and life experience outweighs my karate skill/experience. I have plenty to leaen from you.

Hi Sensei Reece,

 

I know for a fact that your Kata is excellent, it was through your patience and devotion to the art, that I was able to learn Heian Sandan. Me, a mere 9th Kyu student, who will soon be grading for 8th Kyu in September.

 

If it wasn't for the encouragement of yourself, Sensei Leak (Karateronin), Sensei Bates, Jim Reece, and all of the dedicated members at Karate International, I wouldn't have got to where I am now.

 

And I thank each and every one of you, for helping me to realise my true potential.

If an instructor ceases to learn from his students, then his ego has gotten the best of him. I learn plenty from my students, whether it's what not to do or how to improve a little better. That is what is so awesome about martial arts, different people have different energies and perspecitives that they bring with them. I teach in a different way than my instructor does, and sometimes he is amazed at how I can explain things, and the same goes to him from me also.

 

The new, clumsy student will not be able to figure out how to do a certain technique, sometimes.. this is where you both learn how to get the student to figure it out. Sometimes, you find a new perspective when doing this. I know that the more I teach, the more I learn.

With every class in everyday life there is always one thing in common; the teacher teaches the students. However what makes the classes unique is the students within them.

If you read any of the books by any of the past masters, you will probably find that they all learned something from their students at sometime or other.

 

I think that's how a genuine teacher/student relationship should be.

Hey all,

 

My name is Anthony (1st kyu) and I train at the same club as Sensei tobias reece. I am not an instructor but I would like to say that when I become one in the not too distant future(I Hope!!) I would love to learn as much as possible from my students.
