Just curious some of the musical kata's people have seen, and what was the funniest routine>

For me it has to be the girl that did a pattern wearing an Elvis Jumpsuit to viva Las Vegas. She even did the Elvis pelvis shake and hand stuff. So funny I almost cried.

Second has to be the guy I saw dressed up as one of the characters from Mortal Combat, and of course that droning Mortal Combat music.

The Elvis jumpsuit must of cost alot of coin, I not sure if she was a female Elvis impersonator, or had the costume made for the event.

By far the most ridiculous one I've ever seen is some guy *attempting* to do a kata to the Lone Star anthem, dressed in a red, white, and blue gi. That was just sad. There is no other wod for it.

Imagine if Funakoshi found out about musical kata...

Seen a Michael Jackson version once. They did Beat It. Had the red coat and white glove. The break dancing made it pretty cool but no one is more funny that Mike Jackson. LOL.....

Sheesh... you guys have this sort of thing in America? No wonder people give karate a bad name.

Stars and Stripes gis? Elvis outfits? Disco and country music? The "Elvis Pelvis Shake"?

Surely you guys are talking about some weird aerobics workout meets teen talent quest, right?

Not martial arts, right? Surely you don't call this "karate" in the US?

I call it entertainment.

In the US, people take Karate, Kung Fu, etc.

Not for internal objectives but for show, hobby, exercise or sport.

There are very few warriors here, mostly because that takes sacrifice, discipline and pursuit of humility. Also because life here is too damn easy. Musical Kata and all forms of "Hollywood KungFu" are exactly what can be expected from a society such as ours.

It's not my way but it's a way nonetheless.

I do agree that it should be referred to in something other than traditional terms.

How bout "popFu" or "Karatecize"!

:brow: Personally, I have never seen "musical forms" and I hope I never have to. My apologies for taking this depressing tangent....Oh well.

Actually only a portion of martial arts practitioners actually do musical forms. It is one of those sporty competion type changes. It does get attention and may bring some into schools where they will learn that what they have seen is not traditional.

It is really hard to say that it is all bad or that it is all good. It is just one of the transformations that has happened.

I suppose it could be worse. One could be a traditional greco-roman wrestler in this WWF professional "wrestling" world.

But really, there's no need for traditional martial arts to go down that path... if people want just want to dance and exercise and wear glitzy outfits they should do some sort of dance program.

Particularly the guys... dance schools of all styles are desperate for male dance partners. (Plus think of all the women you'd meet!)

Hehe anyway a "stars and stripes" gi would get you automatically disqualified over here. According to Australian Karate Federation competition rules, only a plain white gi is acceptable for competition, including kata.

Honestly I think musical kata is probably the worst thing in the world, as most the time the moves are flash. All that time spent training to do something that is realy impractical.

I agree with the dance school, or do gymnastics.

I find musical kata good for a laugh. But at the same time it saddens me that martial arts have been comercialized this way.

Another funny one I saw was the guy who dressed up like a farmer and pretended he was fixing his garden with a bo staff.

I don't get it. Why not just watch contemporary Wushu forms competitions? They're basically kata-dances, except they are themed around traditional martial arts, the guys do awesome flips, and can jump over two meters up into the air. Why not watch Wushu instead, if you're just in it for the fancy stuff?
