Punching "dummy" for a Self-defense Class

Recommended Posts

Some sort of ancient conditioning program? :)

I take it you've seen the videos of the Shaolin monks conditioning their testicals? Part of me wants to be able to do that. Part of me wants to never see that video again

Not that video specifically. One of my root arts did some pretty wild body conditioniong and breathing patterns for this. Groin shots, throat strikes, that sort of thing. I've seen stuff along that line.

Now luckily, most of this was done a generation before me, speaking student-wise. My own limited exposure to conditioning of this sort is in the form of some rather painful and embarassing experiments :o .

I don't have enough beer on board right now to share those. Needless to say, I don't need to have anything to do with it. Ever again. Even watching videos :) .

... The jewels just aren't that durable...

They're not??? Then you should be training harder

I guess that will be an area of my training that I will never excell in. I like it that way, too!

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments and tips.

This class is not sponsored through my MA school and I think that is why they have had some trouble finding people willing to put on the padding. As ya'll have mentioned, the class is designed for everyday, untrained women whom have, probably, never hit anyone full force and with the intent to damage. Going off what I was briefly told, the class teaches them to attack quickly, decisively, and hard, and then get away.

It will definitely be an interesting experience. :karate:

I think that you will enjoy the class. In the end, the participants will be very appreciative of your participation, as well. I am sure all of you will learn something.

Originally the SD class was going to be in January, but it looks like it has been pushed back to Spring.

I'll be sure to let everyone know how it went once we have the class. Hopefully, I will be able to get some pictures and can post them here.

I would be really interested to see that.

Thanks!

I didn't get to put on the suit and be a punching dummy. Apparently whatever group that they used to put on the SD event had no need for me, they came with their own punching dummy.

Sorry for the anti-climatic ending.

I volunteered to put on a foam suit (like the Red Man suit, I believe) and be the punching dummy for a ladies self defense class. I have never done this before and I heard that the ladies can get a bit aggressive in these classes. Can anyone provide any tips, suggestions, or insight into what to expect?

Thanks!

My experience with the Red Man suit is limited. Reasons for it being limited is that when I wore the suit, I felt rather restricted across the board. The other reason, believe it or not, I'm extremely claustrophobic, and I don't like that feeling.

Yet, everything I've seen about the Red Man suit has more positives than negitives. Embrace its teaching tool on two planes; safety/reality.

:)
