Bitseach Posted June 21, 2002 Posted June 21, 2002 Apparently now if your IQ dips below 80 points you might not be executed quite so quickly as it's now deemed "cruel and unusual" punishment according to a majority of judges in the US Supreme Court. See the story at http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/americas/newsid_2056000/2056235.stm Interesting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~My karma will run over your dogma~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bitseach Posted June 21, 2002 Author Posted June 21, 2002 Um, the zinged-out word was "r e t a r d e d" and is the choice of words of the Justice involved in the case, by the way, and would not be mine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~My karma will run over your dogma~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
shotochem Posted June 21, 2002 Posted June 21, 2002 I agree with the decision. I am pretty much in favor of capital punishment but if a person does not have the capacity to understand lock them away for life. Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
ckdstudent Posted June 21, 2002 Posted June 21, 2002 So the insanity plea isn't enough, now they're going to have a stupidity plea as well? Does that mean that if you've got an IQ over 120 you get two death penalties because you're supposed to be smarter than average? ---------Pil SungJimmy B
shotochem Posted June 21, 2002 Posted June 21, 2002 If the mental illness or lack of intelligence is legitimet and proven in court I dont see a problem with it. On the other hand, if you were so mentally deficient that you couldnt take responsibility for your crime, would you understand that being put to death is cruel and unusual punishment??? Whats with the unusual part anyway?!?!??? Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
Sin Style Posted June 21, 2002 Posted June 21, 2002 couldn't u do bad on the IQ test to get a low score and save ya self
ckdstudent Posted June 21, 2002 Posted June 21, 2002 Wait, a quick death is now both cruel and unusual, but leaving someone to languish in prison for the rest of their life is, I suppose, humane and normal? I dread to think what these people's moral values must be like. ---------Pil SungJimmy B
Sin Style Posted June 22, 2002 Posted June 22, 2002 i dont think it should be based on the persons IQ, shouldn't the punisment (spelling? ) fit the crime, we need capital punisment in england, people get away with anything in our country
jakmak52 Posted June 22, 2002 Posted June 22, 2002 My opinoin is, that if you take a human life, regardless of your mental capacity/quality,ethnic background, religious preferrence, or style of dress, you may not be responsible, but you need to be held accountable for your actions....
