I've used low kicks to knees, etc. (not hard to actually cause damage of course)

Also targetted the groin when swept down. And used shin blocks against kicks (although I am a karateka).

Its all good fun when sparring. I like an opponent to use unexpected techniques and do suprizing stuff. I think most people are too unimaginative when it comes to sparring - jab, jab, jab, like a 3rd rate boxing match. Cut loose a bit. That's what free sparring is for, in my opinion.

Never actually punched anyone in the knees if standing up and fighting. However have thrown downward punches as I've swept my opponent. Or thrown a downward angled punch over my opponents defense. I've even punched my opponent in the groin when I found myself on the ground and he was still standing.

Knee vs. Fist .......???

Ill put $50.00 on the Knee coming out on top :brow: :brow: :brow:

Its not a good idea to punch anyones knees or shins you will only damage yourself.

The groin is a quite effective target though

A punch to the knee would be interesting, you'd need to bend in order to perform it and set yourself up for a fairly nice counter. Downwards punches to the stomach, groin, and even thighs can be quite useful though.

We work punching the leg when we trap a kick. Just to force a Charlie Horse. LOL.

When sparring barefist, our senpai used to punch us in the shins as we tried to do roundhouses or front kicks. It hurt like crazy. He would first do that scooping block from Heian Nidan, then punch the shin with his first two knuckles. It's quite effective, as is a forearm or elbow smash against their knee or inner thigh.

As for being unexpected, leglocks, such as those in Shuai Chiao and Sambo, work wonders against Karateka who like low, solid stances. Basically, if you know your about to get hit, just throw yourself to the floor. Fold back onto your knees and just drop, with your legs facing them. Get their front leg in a knee lock and take 'em down. From their, you can push their back or chest down with your knee and pound the pulp out of them, and then spring back up onto your feet. Of course, this only works if it's unexpected. If they know what you're gonna do, you'll just end up getting a stomp to the groin as soon as you go down. :dead:

Leg hooks seem to work quite well too, simply slip inside punching range, slide your foot behind theirs and yank.

Lunge to the inside of a round kick and block using your elbow. Make sure you are targetting the thigh and not the shin.

Do it gently or your sparring partner may never talk to you again.

If both of you are standing up you wouldn't want to bend over to punch someone in the knee. First off the knee is stronger than your fist and 2nd why would you want to bring your face close to his or her knee and foot. It will make a boot to the grill or knee to the ojo too easy.
