Patrick Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 http://www.mddailyrecord.com/article.cfm?id=5467&type=UTTMAs one of nearly 150 measures signed by Gov. Martin O’Malley Thursday during his fourth, and final, bill signing, the new law adds mixed martial arts to the list of sports regulated by the Maryland State Athletic Commission. The athletic commission, part of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, is now charged with drafting the regulations that will be used and training a pool of referees and judges for mixed martial arts fights. Even though the law is effective Oct. 1, licensing of fighters and promoters will likely not start taking place until early in 2009.
