Carjacking scenarios are a valid area of study for the martial artist. I used to train with a man named Dick Severance who put out some videos on th subject of defensing against a carjacking attemtp, but I think those videos might be rare to find nowadays. In many of those videos, one of my former instructors, Karl Koch, would act in the role of the carjacker and he would often get slammed in the door jam as a regular defense. Different variations on the scenario used simulated knives and guns to expediate the carjacking. Dick had a background in the military's Underwater Demolition Teams before the UDTs were reorganized as Navy Seals, so his stuff was pretty good and he was an excellant teacher. Carjackings are pretty common, relatively speaking. What does the forum think about thier odds of surviving a carjacking attempt, with their car intact (almost anybody can survive by surrendering their keys)? Does anybody have any experience with training on techniques where you are in the driver's seat when such an assault happens? Has anybody ever been carjacked before? Can anybody give some sound advice or good specualtions about how to defend against this sort of thing from the driver's seat? Thanks in advance for your replies.

This is a tough scenario, because you have to be able to deal with the angles that you are being assaulted from. It is not like anything else, really. Any movements that you make are going to be very noticible. I think training like this would be interesting, and very helpful.

It would be really tough, especially if he is at an angle behind you. How would you punch?

Car jackings are always armed. My plan is to comply, get out, while turning the engine off if I can remember, then as they turn it on my concealed weapon is drawn and put to their head. Whether or not they live depends on their immediate reaction to my demand that their hands touch the ceiling. Seeing as how they just threatened my life with a weapon, the car jacker has no room for error.

If I'm in the car alone- meaning my kids aren't stuck in the back- I may be more likely to just let them go.

Sounds like my plan.

If I'm alone, they get the car. If my kids are in it, I do my best to control the weapon and start shooting.

Controling the weapon is first and formost in any situation like this. I do agree, that they will most likley be armed. It's useful to go and work scenarios like this from a cor from time to time to get used to the space and movment confinments.

That's exactly how I used to think, until I realized that a carjacker, once they get the car, may yet kill someone, even if its not me. That's why- if possible, I'll still stop them. But I won't try as hard.
