lupus yonderboy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 How do you guys feel about the unbelievable stuff that goes on in martial art and action movies in general? There was a time when I didn't like those techniques and representations of fighting - I wanted everything to be realistic. But now that I train in primarily functional, real contact systems, I can really appreciate the less realistic, flippy stuff in movies. What about you guys? NightOwl Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 There are times when I appreciate realistic fighting, and other times that I love to see the acrobatic stunt work and skillful choreography going into a lot of movie fights. Personally I think a mix of far out moves yet with a little bit of realism (just enough to make you THINK someone might be able to pull everything off ) is the best. It's best to take it on a movie by movie basis. One thing I don't like though: wirework Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.~Theodore Roosevelt
bushido_man96 Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I am with you, lupus. Just a bit of spinning and jumping make it fun to watch.I am also with you, Eric....no wires! https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com

NightOwl Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Oi! Kung fu movies are where it all started! I'll help you out by plugging my own agendas and bias in written form: http://www.karateforums.com/uncle-nightowl-s-martial-movie-reviews-vt30723.htmlI haven't updated it in awhile because it takes up time to write a review and I am lazy. I'll probably start putting some more up tomorrow though. Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.~Theodore Roosevelt

yingampyang Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Well i think that the over the top moves in the movies are an insult to the martial arts community. I think that there is no 1 style , and that to truly become a great martial artist and person you must take information from where ever you can.
blackxpress Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I really like the ones where they fly through the air and land on tree branches and stuff like that. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon comes to mind.
bushido_man96 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I didn't care for Fearless, but I liked Rumble in the Bronx. I also like the fights in the Bourne series. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com

I love watching the guys that can do all that stuff without the wires though. That way you know it's real and that they could really do that to someone if they needed to (though I kind of hope for the other person's sake they don't )."The Protector" and "Drunken Master" are by far my favorite martial arts movies.
