ps1 Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Yup, crappy rule. Clearly made to keep the tournament more flashy. Sorry to hear about that. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
bushido_man96 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 What seems crazy to me is the fact that it was an ITF tourney rule. In WTF, I know that punches don't seem to score that often, and would figure it would be a rule from a tourney of that style. Very strange. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
DWx Posted October 15, 2007 Author Posted October 15, 2007 I watched the ITF Worlds on webcam earlier this year and there was no restriction on punching, in fact a lot of the coaches were encouraging it! "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius
The BB of C Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Sport martial arts have become quite stupid with rules like this.
lupus yonderboy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Was sparring in a tournament at the weekend and the ref kept giving me warnings eventually resulting in a deducted point. Only about halfway through the 1st 1 minute round did he tell me that punching more than twice in a combo was forbidden. What kind of stupid rule is that!?! As soon as the fight closes in you can only do 2 punches, then have to pull back to do a leg before going in for a punch again. I wouldn't go so far as to call it my signature move but in my club I'm known for taking a fight in and then boxing my opponents until they escape. I'd done something to my right leg earlier sometime during/after forms (we think it was a pulled hamstring) so I was counting on minimal use of my legs and this rule really limited me on what I could do. I checked the rules before hand and nowhere does it say that punching is limited to 2 techniques only. My coach didn't know about it either until I walked off the mat in a foul mood.Anyone agree with me that only allowing 2 punches is totally stupid? How is that ever going to resemble a real fight at all? IMO it also disrupts the flow of the fight. Once you're in, you want to stay in, not pull back to flick your leg about before being allowed another punch! Referees make me so mad sometimes...Yeah. That's a reaally stupid rule.Judging from your post, you seem to like things as realistic as possible. Have you ever considered taking up western boxing? It might be something you'd enjoy more. DWx Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 Yeah. That's a reaally stupid rule.Judging from your post, you seem to like things as realistic as possible. Have you ever considered taking up western boxing? It might be something you'd enjoy more.I think my punching game could really benefit but the clubs round here are either very male orientated or only do cardio-boxing. I also am very limited on time at the moment. Still its something to really look into once I'm at uni or afterwards. Its not that I don't like TKD, I love it. However I get more and more fustrated in tournaments nowadays when stupid rules like these are imposed. Its supposed to be "the art of self-defense" but to be honest rules like this don't exactly promote that aspect. "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius
yingampyang Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Yes i agree that is a stupid rule. Its only there to make the touraments look better. I think that there is no 1 style , and that to truly become a great martial artist and person you must take information from where ever you can.
Ozpunker Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already but the worst thing it can see with this is that it's too easy to predict what the other person is going to do. Once you block the 2 punches you get ready for some sort of kick and counter attack it.
DWx Posted June 2, 2008 Author Posted June 2, 2008 I think I've kinda reversed my opinions on this. I sparred in a tournament a few months back where this rule wasn't implemented. It was awful. I think our club was the only ones doing what resembled like proper fighting, everyone else was brawling. In my first (and only) bout I had 6 foot girl who literally jumped on me. I kept catching her with punches as she came in and then following through and she simply just soaked it all up and started windmilling. Looked like she was doing the front crawl. The only viable techniques for me to do that close were elbows and knees which aren't allowed. Although I think a two punch rule is bad.. I do think it is the lesser of two evils when compared to something like this. Granted it is totally unrealistic but it does keep those two punches proper punches whereas these people were just throwing their arms around. Also with hindsight I've had to learn to get in there, do my punches and then get out quickly without getting caught. I don't like it but I like it a lot more than windmilling. bushido_man96 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 You can get around the windmilling with footwork and ring control. If they run at you, plant them with a kick. When you get in close, punches become natural. I like to punch when close, hooks and uppercuts. I then try to clear out with a kick when they begin to back up. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
