Withers M.A.A. Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 I don't practice traditional Kama forms but I do open kama forms. More dynamic. Not quite as practical because we have a lot of kicking drills in it and if it was real you would never throw a kick at a samurai holding a sword unless you wanted to lose the foot. SaiFightsMS Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 I have watched others learn Kobu Ichii Gama no kama. I was busy with sai at the time and let them go their way while I was doing my thing. At some point I do plan to learn the kama kata however, I need to get kama first.
tessone Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 Can someone enlighten this Korean MA about what kama katas are? Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
Tobias_Reece Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 The kata for the gama in my syllabus is Kobu Ni Cho Gama Once again this is a modernish kata created by one of the Matayoshi family. TESSONE: Kama are basically sickles, with gama being the plural. Kata is a form "You Are Never Given A Dream Without Also Being Given The Power To Make It True. You May Have To Work For It, However"Principal Kobudo Instructor & OwnerWest Yorkshire Kobudo Academy2nd Kyu (Matayoshi Okinawan Kobudo, IOKA UK)
Withers M.A.A. Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 Kata is a form. Kama is a weapon that is usually used in pairs and is basically a farming sickle. Original name of the weapon is NichoGama (spelled wrong) 2nd Degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. 1997 NASKA competitor-2nd place Nationally in Blackbelt American Forms. tsdstud Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 As black belts we learn "komo nichi gama" or something like that. I'm probably way off on the spelling. Right now I'm learning "kama hyung cho dan", our basic open kama form cho dan TSD"Every second that you are not training, someone somewhere is training to kick your butt"- Kyo Sa Lyle (my instructor) "Where we going in 5 months?!?!?!" "Cali!!" -Spring Break '04"Life begins at 130 mph".
