While it would be cool to train with Steven Segal,...It looks very fake to me. Not unlike the "chi master" videos.

There's not reason for the guys to let go of him when he just shrugs his shoulders.

Remember the thread in the weapons forum about defending against someone with two knives?

When you watch these videos of Segal, note how his body shifts away from the attack, and does his counter at the same time. That's what we do also in Shorin Ryu...that sort of shifting away and closing down of an attack. There is little energy drain, movements are relaxed and fluid, not hurried...timing is of course very important, and is learned. Although I don't like Aikido students falling over so unrealistically when barely touched, there is some really good stuff in those videos if you know what you're looking at.

What really got me liking the idea of that class is his standards. I've always wanted a teacher like that.

For a big man he is so quick. I think he is, like, 6'6", or something. Now, he is quite a bit bulkier, too.

I was impressed by the weapons stuff. However, the weaponless randori did not impress me as much. The main thing is from the lack of more offensive attacks, like getting punched, as opposed to being run at with hands forward.

Overall, though, I think Segal is the real deal, and I don't think I would try to punch him! :o

This is called Tai Sabaki, or something of the like, in Karate circles, right?

My command of the Japanese language is pretty much nil, so I can't say. We use English for the most part in class. We call it body shifting, or "Change of Body"...we use it a lot, and stress it as highly important.

IMHO. It looks like hollywood film with pre arranged moves. It is dangerous , because some of his students could think they can handle gang in a Street fight...

That's the whole design of the class and that test though. You don't advance unless you can handle a gang in a street fight.
