ps1 Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I recommend you watch some material...Royce Gracie vs Hidehiko Yoshida 1 & 2Helio Gracie Bonus interview Human Weapon Judo episodeRickson & Royler visiting Hayward Nishioka's Judo schoolYup... I think you'll find the two styles very evenly matched after watching and considering all of those. In the Royce Gracie fights, Royce loses both of them (one in a very contraversial decision). However, the Rickson and Royler visit demonstrates Rickson doing very well against olympic caliber guys. I haven't seen the other two.I would completely disagree with you here.First, the human weapon episode- Chambers and Duff are there to do an episode about judo and learn it, not to defeat it. They fight under Judo rules and Chambers clearly holds superiority over his opponent on the ground.Yeah. Your point about Jason on the ground kinda mimics everything we all said about BJJ's submission/ground superiority. The first Royce vs Yoshida fight was stopped early, theres nothing controversial about it- the alternate camera angle that shows Royce jump back to his feet at the same exact time Yoshida does clearly shows that he wasnt even dazed by the sleeve choke. Theres not much evidence in that fight. That's why I said it was very controversial. Many people think (myself included) that the refs decision to stop the fight was just bogus. The second Royce/Yoshida fight shows a Royce Gracie whos outweighed by 40lbs completely dominate a Judo Olympic Gold medalist. To top it off, Royce's jiu jitsu is far from world class (and I mean far) in terms of his "sport" jiu jitsu if you will. Put a competition black belt in there, and I dont this Yoshida would last very long. You're right. I forgot that this one went the distance and was declared a draw when no one won after the 10 minute time expired. But they had more MMA style rules in this match and Royce fought without a gi. So, in that much, it's not as good a demonstration of BJJ v Judo as the first fight would have been without a premature ref stoppage. marie curie Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I think that this is a very silly argument- sorry, but in Judo rules, yes Judo guys will win, in BJJ rules, BJJers will win. In MMA rules, BJJers have an advantage because the rules more closely match that of BJJ. In fact, I think that it's a little wild for people to think that . Karo Parysian is a crazy awesome judo-er and he's never won by throw or anything. BJJers win by submission all the time. yingampyang Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I am wondering which of the two is better to take, as far as submissions and take downs go. From my understanding Jiu Jitsu seems to focus on submission and Judo focuses on take downs. I know both have elements of take downs and submissions, but which one will I learn more and help me out more. Thanks ahead of time.Okay, ive done both and you are correct when saying that judo focuses on take downs , and ju-jitsu focuses on submissions. I think that you should go for ju-jitsu first and then when you are comfortable with it go and do some judo aswell. This will be a great mix and you will have a strong take down and really gud submission. I think that there is no 1 style , and that to truly become a great martial artist and person you must take information from where ever you can.
