Okay, I'm looking for new nunchaku kata to add to my arsenal. I know a single kata, Kobu Nunchaku, but I'm the de facto go-to-guy for weapons at my school, so i need to expand. Anyone have any ideas where I could look, or for that matter, feel like contributing one? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I appreciate the post, but this isn't at all what I was looking for. I see nothing wrong with practicing moves and manipulations, but that's neither what I'm trying to teach or practicing myself.

Nunchuku seem incredibly difficult to master. I've used them a bit and usually end up bruising myself. It's pretty impressive to watch Matayoshi catch the weapon when he switches from hand to hand. Good luck rogue!

It really does take a lot of work. I can't even tell you how many times I've smacked myself with them. To the inexperienced, the nunchaku are more dangerous to the user than anyone else.

From what I've been able to discern, there doesn't seem to be any such thing as a "traditional" nunchaku kata. It appears that individual schools have their own katas, which of course makes it all the more frustrating to try to find anything.

There is a pair of nunchaku kata that we practice in my school. I've learned the first one, and am quite hesitant to learn the second, however they are part of the Shorinkan system so it may be easy to find videos or instructions on them. The names are Shorinkan No Nunchaku Dai Ichi and Shorinkan No Nunchaku Dai Ni

Dai Ichi is incredibly easy to learn, and reasonably repetitive in spots. Good for practicing figure eights and pokes.

Dai Ni introduces the backwards figure eight and different pokes and well as blocks and turns, far more complex than Dai Ichi.

Ya, I had the same problem when I first started as well, I bought rattan but when I kept hitting my self I bought foam covered to learn with, that really helped.

In my style for our blackbelt testing we must create one empty hand kata and one weapon kata, I currently have created a fairly simple nunchaku kata that I will upload to youtube soon, as soon as I do I'll give you the link.
