rogue2257 Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Okay, I'm looking for new nunchaku kata to add to my arsenal. I know a single kata, Kobu Nunchaku, but I'm the de facto go-to-guy for weapons at my school, so i need to expand. Anyone have any ideas where I could look, or for that matter, feel like contributing one? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
DWx Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I came across this site a while ago, has a load of their own katas on video:http://www.nunchaku.org/ "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius
AndrewGreen Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 To keep with the same style you might want ot look for these two:Seibu Nunchakuhttp://kata-reference.com/index.php?style=8&kata=119Nunchaku Sandanhttp://kata-reference.com/index.php?style=8&kata=94 Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!
KISYYI Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 I DONT DO OR TEACH KATA. I BELEIVE IN INDIVIDUAL MOVES AND FREESTYLE. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE, I POSTED SOME VIDS IN THE WEAPONS SECTION AS WELL. ENJOY!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OinuBzl6ewc MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.
rogue2257 Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 I appreciate the post, but this isn't at all what I was looking for. I see nothing wrong with practicing moves and manipulations, but that's neither what I'm trying to teach or practicing myself.
sperki Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Nunchuku seem incredibly difficult to master. I've used them a bit and usually end up bruising myself. It's pretty impressive to watch Matayoshi catch the weapon when he switches from hand to hand. Good luck rogue!
rogue2257 Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 It really does take a lot of work. I can't even tell you how many times I've smacked myself with them. To the inexperienced, the nunchaku are more dangerous to the user than anyone else. From what I've been able to discern, there doesn't seem to be any such thing as a "traditional" nunchaku kata. It appears that individual schools have their own katas, which of course makes it all the more frustrating to try to find anything.
Sensei_Suzy Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 There is a pair of nunchaku kata that we practice in my school. I've learned the first one, and am quite hesitant to learn the second, however they are part of the Shorinkan system so it may be easy to find videos or instructions on them. The names are Shorinkan No Nunchaku Dai Ichi and Shorinkan No Nunchaku Dai NiDai Ichi is incredibly easy to learn, and reasonably repetitive in spots. Good for practicing figure eights and pokes.Dai Ni introduces the backwards figure eight and different pokes and well as blocks and turns, far more complex than Dai Ichi. "We do not do karate. We are karate." -Hanshi Doug Perry

Ya, I had the same problem when I first started as well, I bought rattan but when I kept hitting my self I bought foam covered to learn with, that really helped. Be direct in your attacks.

In my style for our blackbelt testing we must create one empty hand kata and one weapon kata, I currently have created a fairly simple nunchaku kata that I will upload to youtube soon, as soon as I do I'll give you the link. Be direct in your attacks.
