Yes, I have attended a class at the Brighton shotokan although Dave Hazard was not there.

I have got two more classes at different clubs to see before I make my final decision.

Don’t spend your life window shopping Dan :)

I am a Wado man so I do not profess to know anything about Shotokan, but even I have heard of Dave Hazard. He is a karate "old boy", one of Enoeda's students as I understand it, from back in the sixties.

Like my Sensei, those guys learned the hard way, really hard.

I would give it a bash I were you.

Less Keyboard Waza and more Kihon Waza if I were you :)

You're in Brighton? Dude, you're missing the obvious then - Dave Hazard's club!

Sensei Dave Hazard is a legend of karate.

Did you train with him ?

Sadly not, he left the KUGB before I joined. Have trained with some of his contemporaries (Andy Sherry, Terry O'Neill, Mr Enoeda, Bob Rhodes et al) though and have nothing but respect for that generation of karateka.

This is me doing some basic kicks, I know the back kick leaves a bit to be desired, but I had put it up a few months ago now.

So I would like to have thought I had improved it.

I have to agree with Killer Miller's comments.

The general quality of technique was pretty good but all of the kicks pulled back to soon and could do with a bit more kime.

Ditto the arms flapping too much on the mawashi and mikazuki geris, keep the elbows in.

Make sure you don't hold the leg up after the kick has finished, get it back to the floor straight away.

On that same note, make sure your kicks all start from the floor and finish on the floor.

Each time you kicked it came up to the knee (which was good) but then there was an ever so slight pause in the movement, which is bad because it disrupts the flow and build up of momentum in the kick, therefore making it harder to engage the muscles around the hips to extend the leg out for the kick, resulting in less kime.

Hope that helps.
