The vid was dark; it was really hard to see what was going on. The window behind didn't help, either.

The spin back kick looked "held up," like you could have followed-through more. Just a thought. :karate:

I thought your maegeri was particularly good.

My Sensei would have probably said that you were holding your leg up too long after performing the kicks. Really you need to get your foot back on the floor as quick as poss.

In all honesty though I thought they were pretty good.

How is the left leg?

1. You need more hips on all actions - hips drive the legs out, not the legs...

2. You are not extending the kicks out far enough and are pulling them back too soon - All Kicks. Don't pull the leg back if you are in an imbalanced state just to pull the leg back. Focus on a imaginary target as if really kicking something or somebody.

3. Lacking Kime a bit - in reference to above.

4. Your posture is reasonably good, but you do move your hands excessively a bit when kicking - this cause your shoulders to lean slightly putting you off balance when returning from the kicks.

5. Your Mawashi-geri is off target because you are not extending you knee to the target enough and also not being extended because of the reasons I mention above...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissatisfied with what I see. But you wanted critique as to how to do it correctly and how to improve. The above is what I see wrong.

Thanks for the advice guys. It will all be taken on board, especially when you say about kime. I'm sure my kicks will hold effectiveness when actually applied, so thanks for reminding me to keep this frame of mind at all times.

As far as my left leg is concerned, it never quite lives up to my right leg, but I am still working on that...

you should take pictures of yourself doing kata and different techniques so that you can document your improvement and find what areas you are doing well at and which you can improve on. this is the same general idea as practicing in front of a mirror, but has the added benefit of extended analysis. good luck!

I train in the Portslade area, on my own at the moment, awaiting a reply from the KUGB.

Have you tried Brighton shotokan dojo ?

Go to brighton shotokan karate site which is part of Academy of shotokan karate for times and venue .
