I could see how some could be useful in a grappling context, but as far as I know grappling isn't taught too much in Karate...right?

I don't really think so. However, some guys, like Iain Abernethey, do some grappling in their Karate styles. It just depends, really. This is more the exception than the rule, I think.

However, transitions to takedowns would be more common.
