Bobby Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 I dont know about any of you guys, but who does their katas left, right, forwards and backwards?..............I do. Yeah!
Tobias_Reece Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 What do u mean by this? Do you mean if we all go in different directions when doing kata? If so then yes (obviously) However, I think that you mean to question if we practise our katas facing different 'walls'. If so, then yes to that as well (obviously ). ANyway, if I'm wrong I'll admit defeat, and maybe you could post again so we can all understand. "You Are Never Given A Dream Without Also Being Given The Power To Make It True. Bobby Posted May 28, 2002 Author Posted May 28, 2002 no, I mean, for example - start from the end of heian shodan and work backwards ( is that any better?) Yeah!
G95champ Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 We have done it just to mess arround but we don't practice it that way. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Bobby Posted May 29, 2002 Author Posted May 29, 2002 OH! ok, well I have learnt my kata's left right, backwards and forwards! I thought that many clubs did this training???? Yeah!
shotochem Posted May 29, 2002 Posted May 29, 2002 I havent tried backwards...Yet!!! We have tried kata facing every direction and opposite mirror image and even with eyes closed Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
SaiFightsMS Posted May 29, 2002 Posted May 29, 2002 Bobby yes, I understand what you mean. And I have done some of my katas backwards. And some of them I have done the normal way and then done them starting from the opposite side turning in the opposite direction using the opposite side of the body for the same moves. It can be very challanging and and can help you to see different applications for the same moves. There are a few others in my club who have done the same thing. It seems to be a concept that some just sort of "come up with" when they train. Like - hey I always do this on this side shouldn't I learn how to use the other side the same way.
tessone Posted May 29, 2002 Posted May 29, 2002 Last night at testing, our master asked us to do our form the way SaiFights describes (starting in defensive stance and doing everything with the opposite side). It was an interesting exercise, and the people who had the form down best went the farthest before he told us to stop. I certainly plan to try it backwards more often! _________________ Chris Tessone White Belt, Kuk Sool Won [ This Message was edited by: tessone on 2002-05-29 14:03 ] Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
Tobias_Reece Posted May 29, 2002 Posted May 29, 2002 Oh, I understand now - silly me I have done that a few times, but I dont incorporate it into my regular training. On second thoughts....... Bobby Posted May 29, 2002 Author Posted May 29, 2002 By doing kata's in so many differerent directions (facing a different wall) as well as doing the katas left right forwards and backwards you can internalise them.... once you have done that then you can start to look at things like, softening the chest, sinking in the thigh, foot and hand timing, relaxing the shoulders, shorter kime.....ect Thats the way I have started doing it. and not just with kata also with basics and kumite. try doing you kumite when both sides have the same legs forward or the other way round (mabey even personal add on's) What do you think?
