In Pinan 3...

Can someone tell me some of the stances used? We were doing stances last night and I kept slipping in and out of forward stance and back stance. I just want to know some that are used.

I practice shito-ryu so my pinan might be slightly different than yours. In pinan sandan(3) you come across cat stance, back stance, square stance, and forward stance.

I study Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu.

Pinan san dan or Pinan 3 uses mainly nekoashi-dachi (cat stance)

Zenkutsu-dachi (forward stance) and Kosadashi-dach (no idea what it is in english:>)

In wado-ryu, Pinan Sandan uses mainly shomen neko ashi dachi (forward cat stance), shiko-dachi (sumo stance) and zenkutsi-dachi (forward stance).

cat stance, short forward stance in spear hand trust,sumo stance.

Back Stance, Square Stance, Front Stance, Sumo Stance, and Horse Stance

Not for sure, but guessing...maybe Okinawan Te?

I believe that the first karate style to use the Pinans (Heians, in japanese) was the Shorin-Ryu style of Okinawan karate. The legendary Okinwan karate master Anko Itosu seems to have had a hand in the development of this series of kata.
