the undead shall feast Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I've never taken a self - defense class or any Martial Arts classes ever....in my life. Maybe some Tai Bo in middle school. I'm 19 I chain smoke and I'm out of shape. I'm wanting to enroll in these Jiu Jitsu classes at the Y but, I'm curious about a few things. Do martial arts discipline you if you want it and all that junk, and is there really a spiritual side to it? I'm not being dumb this is a 100% real question. I've been wanting to start that class for a month or so now, but I've not had time as of yet. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
lordtariel Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Do martial arts discipline you? Yes, if you want to get good you have to be disciplined. Is there a spiritual side to it? Sometimes. It depends on your definition of spiritual. If you mean as in religion, some places do, others don't. My guess is that a Y class isn't going to throw religion at you. If you're talking about developing your spirit as in fighting spirit, most arts do. If by developing your spiritual side you mean self development through meditation, there's a little of that too. Like I said, it really depends on the instructor and the type of class. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
the undead shall feast Posted June 20, 2007 Author Posted June 20, 2007 sweet, no, i'm not talking about spiritual in a religious sense, but like you said a fighting spirit be more in tune with my senses and all that junk Revenge is a dish best served cold.
Hideout Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 sweet, no, i'm not talking about spiritual in a religious sense, but like you said a fighting spirit be more in tune with my senses and all that junkI dont think many types of martial arts require a certain religion, but the meditation that some forms use may do something for your spirituality, give you some insight on your beliefs, at least it did for me, it really all depends on what type you choose.
bushido_man96 Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 It really depends on the school and instructor. Your best bet would be to go ask them some of those questions when you get a chance. Many martial arts styles help to create discipline, among other attributes. Just making yourself go and better yourself will do this as well. Try it out. Good luck to you! And welcome to KF! https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com

I've been wanting to start that class for a month or so now, but I've not had time as of yet.You shouldn't smoke. That'll be what kills you in martial arts.Jiu Jitsu is a very fun style to learn.Of course they dicipline you in several different ways. You tend to learn respect, perservearance, and your body gets pretty diciplined too which makes you stronger. There is a spiritual side to it. But only if you want there to be. Make sure you don't go into a place that teaches philosophy or have a spiritual side to their martial arts because it will be a very frustrating class for you if you don't want that kind of thing. That's my advice.

Yes most definitly there is a spritual side as well as a mind and body side. To do martial arts you have to be into it , i say this to my stundents all the time. I do not take people into my class if they are not comited to the arts. I think that there is no 1 style , and that to truly become a great martial artist and person you must take information from where ever you can.
