smckeown Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Ever been asked "Show me what you've got?"If so what did you do?A few years ago we had someone from another style come to our dojo and ask me the above question. He then got into a fighting stance.I politely replied "Really?"He unknowingly said "Sure"I then very quickly took him to the ground with a leg sweep that he never saw coming. He got up off the ground and said embarrassingly "That was a good move, you will have to show that to me." He left and never came back. Scotthttp://www.pressurepointkarate.com
Hideout Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 I had someone tell me that at school once when he found out I was into martial arts, then he put his hands up in about the worst boxing stance I've ever seen, I just kinda laughed and walked away, so did everyone else, and he was just left standing there for a few seconds.
G95champ Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Yeah I walk away. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
french fri25 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 same here. i just walk away. i aint gonna be the one to start somethin just because someone thinks he's a tough guy.
obiwansbane Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 yes ive been asked that, i usually just laugh it off then go into a hugely exagerated stance while making similar noises to the guy playing bruce lee in "Dragon" Brown belt... win trophies... grade... lose trophies... so much fun
Montana Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Depending on the situation...such as at a friends gathering and meeting somebody new...if they ask me to show them something, my favorite thigsg to do is right from where I'm at, launch my fastest backfist (my personal favorite) and just touch the end of their nose, or damn close to it. Their eyes go VERY wide, and they don't say much else. Kind of depends on my mood and the situation I guess. If you don't want to stand behind our troops, please..feel free to stand in front of them.Student since January 1975---4th Dan, retired due to non-martial arts related injuries.
YoungMan Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 I've been challenged a few times by people who didn't know I practiced martial arts. My first reaction is to walk away. If they persist, my response is "If I show you what I've got, you're going to be in a lot of pain, and I like my job and my freedom." There is no martial arts without philosophy.
Kieran-Lilith Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 "Well, I've got a quarter, a pen, shoes...you'll have to be more specific than that." He who gains a victory over other men is strong; but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful Lao-tsu
The BB of C Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Yes. I've been said that quite a few times. It usually ended with the other person curled up in a ball on the ground and groaning in pain or claiming I broke his ribs.
ps1 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 As it's usually a guy who thinks he's tough that says this, my favorite response is to tell him I'm not allowed to hit girls. (No offense intended ladies out there. I've met alot of you that I would not want to mess with.) That usually gets them to lighten up and laugh or swear and walk away. It's never gone farther than that.If I get the sense that the person is genuinely interested I handle it differently. I'll usually show them a basic wrist release or something and give them a card to the school where I train. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
