Hi everyone, I have been talking to a man that runs a karate club in a town near me and he says he is part of a martial arts organization called the New World Martial Arts Association. Has anyone heard of it? I've tried looking for a website to see if they are a good organization since it could be something he is making up, I'd hate to spend $105 for bogus lessons.

I have ninja monkies in my brain and they are using it as a trampaline.

I can't find anything on New World Martial Arts Association either aside from a few links to an aikido book called "Aikido Techniques & Tatics". Not a good start for an world association to be lacking a website.

Here is one of the three links that came up about the book and author Click here

Do you know a website for this karate club or school you are inquiring about?

Are you SURE its NEW World Martial Arts Association or just World Martial Arts Association? If it is instead the latter then I found this http://www.wmaa.com/ and a few other links.

$105 seems steep right off the top for most areas in the USA I must admit... though may not be depending on the cost of living in the area, quality instruction and class size... I actually pay slightly more :( (I do not live in the States).

Hope that helped.

I haven't watched any classes because I don't have a license and or a car but I did find a website that the teacher's sensei is part of so at least he is telling the truth about his sensei and the price is for 3 months so it comes out to $35 a month which isn't bad and he also gives free gi's. My next step is to go and watch some classes and see what they are like.

Ahhh I see. Well then that is pretty cheap for 3 months + a gi. Also glad you found out a lil more info.

More than likely once you watch a class you will hopefully be able to gauge a bit more whether it is worth it or not.

Good luck

$35/month is an extremely reasonable price. I would go watch a class or two (he may even let you participate if you ask). If you like it, give it a try.

thanks for the tips and as soon as I gather up some money and get a car I'm going down there and watching a class or two, the sensei sounds like a nice guy and I'll talk to the students as well, a teacher is only as good as the students he teaches.

Since you found out the instructors sensei , call that Sensei on the phone and ask questions of the club you found. You can always go to that dojo as well, if its in a reasonable distance. The "Master" should be receptive to questions and should be happy to assist you.

If it were me 'and its not' I would ask the Sensei at your club, what his rank is, ask to see his last menjo "certificate of rank" and look for the other Sensei name, on the certificate. This way you can be sure that there is a clear path to rank/promotions within your organization.

One thing you should avoid like the plague, is ANYWHERE that the instructor is not whom he or she claims to be. If they get offended by yor questions, move on !!!! Thats not the place for you.

Since there are no laws or regulations governing martial arts clubs or teachers, here in the US, anyone can open a dojo and claim to be any rank they want, you can even do this.

Ask the questions and don't be intimidated by the belt color. If they are offended or give excuses, RUN DON'T WALK, to the nearest exit....

And above all else, no matter where you go - don't sign any contracts, pay monthly. Your not financing a car, its karate lessons.....
