The BB of C
A long while ago, I got curious as to just how many different styles of martial arts there are. I looked it up and with the help of our good friend Mr. Internet (Google to be precice), I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_martial_artsI've looked through it all a few times. I counted 302 different styles there. With some styles in the list that are in the articles. I've been calling them "sub-styles" or "branches" whichever term felt appropriate at the time. Anyway, I'm estimating in that whole thing there being at least 350-400 different styles/systems of martial arts. That's simply amazing to me.After I got over my amazement, I started thinking if after even all that, was anything missing from this list. What do you think?P.S.If you have your own style/system of martial arts that is not listed here, it doesn't count.
DWx
IMO I don't think that you will ever get a complete list of all martial arts. That list really contains the styles that are more prominent and are known about, for all we know there could be some tribe in the middle of the Amazon that has its own systematic way of fighting yet it is not on that list.Fighting systems will change and evolve, just look at how many styles of karate have appeared yet many of them are linked to one another in some way. There will be more deviations and amalgamations until further styles are created and deserve to be added to that list. (I don't know if anyone else counts it as a martial art but I did notice that Keysi Fighting Method is not listed). By the way, did you count the substyles as a style on their own or did you just include their parent-style? bushido_man96
It is hard to tell how many styles are really out there. Just becaue one isn't listed, doesn't mean that it isn't credible, as well. I didn't check the list, but I am sure it is not really complete. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
GOM
That list is very subjective, and a waste of time IMO.
YoungMan
You could make the most complete list in the world, and some clown will always complain that HIS style wasn't listed, especially because he holds a 10th Dan and is the Supreme Grandmaster of it. There is no martial arts without philosophy.
french fri25
you will never be able to count the number of martial arts there are in the world. every day there is someone who makes up his own art, and calls himself a 10th dan. hell, i could be a 10th dan. all i would need to do is make up a cool name and use by basic knowledge of jkd, hkd, and mdk, plus some weapons. there you go, i just made my own art, add it to the list
The BB of C
You could be right and there are thousands of instances like that. Though I do believe that to create a martial art, one needs a lot more than what you just listed there. But that's an issue I addressed in the P.S. Note. If you created a style that is not listed, it does not count. That being said, do you think it's a complete list?
marie curie
I think that this is a pretty comprehensive list- not that there will ever be a complete list. bushido_man96
After browsing the list, I didn't see Kwon Bup listed, which was an ancient Korean style, if I remeber correctly. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
