SaiFightsMS Posted May 25, 2002 Posted May 25, 2002 Wado ryu is fairly traditional and is an Okinawan style.

Morgray Posted May 27, 2002 Posted May 27, 2002 Wado ryu is fairly traditionnal but is not an Okinawan style. It's a Shotokan offshoot so it's Japanese.
Eye of the Tiger Posted May 27, 2002 Author Posted May 27, 2002 what do you mean by shotokan offshoot?
El Guerrero Loco Posted May 27, 2002 Posted May 27, 2002 shotokan offshoot? its created by a different person...Onohri Ohtsuka(not sure if spelling is right) he was a jui jitsu master. "Live free.Die well..."
Karateka Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 Traditionally the Founder of Wado Ryu trained with Ginchin Funakoshi, but they had differing views on Karate. He decided to make his own style which combined Karate with Ju Jutsu Rumor: It was also said that he was to succeed Funakoshi as Grandmaster, but since mastership follows lineage, they would not accept him. Same happened with my Grandmaster. "Never hit a man while he's down; kick him, its easier"Sensei Ron Bagley (My Sensei)
Morgray Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 Yes, Hironori Ohtsuka decided to create his own style because he and Master Funakoshi had different opinions on sparring and competition. Master Funakoshi got really angry when he saw his student Ohtsuka practicing sparring with another student using protections (kendo armours). So Master Ohtsuka (who already was a Ju Jutsu master) left Master Funakoshi and started Wado Ryu. It's interesting to see that Wado Ryu katas remained closer to original Okinawa katas...
Eye of the Tiger Posted May 28, 2002 Author Posted May 28, 2002 Wado ryu is one of the four largest karate styles in Japan but is steeped in Okinawan tradition.
