DWx Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 When I first started training in the MAs I didn't research different styles or even really know what my style was going to be about before I went and saw a class. It wasn't until I had had a few years training that I seriously began looking at other styles. How did you choose your art? Did you just see a local club and join or did you research to find out exactly what you wanted? "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius
Ippiki_Ookami Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Although I love my club and MA style, I have to admit that I first chose the club because I had hardly any choice. I didn't want my parents to be inconvenienced by driving me to class in the evening, so I picked the club which was within walking distance. I did do my research though - I didn't just walk in and sign up, I made sure to watch a class and see that it was a good club. =)I did a lot of searching on the internet to find out which MA I wanted to take, but in the end the research didn't come to much use.

bushido_man96 Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 I chose my art because it was the only one available in the area.I went to a class with a friend, and that was all she wrote. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
ninjanurse Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 My arts chose me. Funny how opportunities arise and things fall into place. "A Black Belt is only the beginning."Heidi-A student of the artsTae Kwon Do,Shotokan,Ju Jitsu,Modern Arnishttp://the100info.tumblr.com/
karatekid1975 Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 When I first started, I didn't know about the different styles and things like that. All I knew was what I saw in the Karate Kid movies. I knew what a "dojo" was from the first KK movie. So I went looking. I looked at a few places. But my TSD dojang just "felt right." So I joined. The rest is history. Laurie F
french fri25 Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 i went to a JKD school and stupidly joined. i joined because i didnt know what i was supposed to expect from a martial art. then, i looked up hapkido on long island, and 1 school popped up. i gave the guy a call and went for a free class. i loved it. i coldnt join the hkd school though because i had a 6 month contract with my jkd school. about 2 months later, the hkd instructor called me up and said he felt bad that i was forced to stay at the jkd school, so he let me come train absolutely for free until my other contract was up. he gave me a free uniform and a free 2 months of classes. once my jkd contract was up, i started paying my hkd instructor. he didnt ask for extra money or anything. my instructor is absolutely the worst salesman in the world. he is just a generous, unselfish person. he doesnt make a business out of his school. its more like a family than a business.if we need extra time, he lets us have private lessons for free. he just wants to see us do good in life. thats what i love about him. he also has so much experience in different arts that go so well together. he was in the United States special forces, he has a 3rd degree black belt in hkd, a 2nd degree black belt in moo duk kwan, and a 3rd degree black belt in jiu jutsu, so we get excellent all around instruction.
bushido_man96 Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 It sounds like you have a great instructor there, french fri25. That was a very generous act by him, and I think you have done well by him. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
french fri25 Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 yes, he really is a great person. i am so greatful to have an instructor like him. he really showed me what martial arts are really about. so many people teach martial arts in order to make money over anything else and thats wrong. he teaches martial arts to show people how to be better people and how to better their lives.oooh yea, and how to beat people up
masterintraining Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 well i was suppose to train at this dumn 4 week program that was suppose to be 1 one class per week, and it also was only 1 hour classes, plus the price was so high that with the same amount of money for the 4 week program i could train at my current school for about 8 months!! plus my mom whould have to be my transportation and at the time she had to work own the day i had practice, so when my mom told me i could not train there i was depressed but then i decided to go to a school that had just opened up a couple blocks away from us so i joined there the next day, and had my first class the fallowing. you must learn different combinations of techniques down to your very soul and they must come without thinking when you finish with one technique, you must immediately go into another until you have attained your goal which is to destroy the enemy.
