how to improve...

Recommended Posts

when we spar, one person can only use their hands. no kicks at all. and the other person can only use kicks. no hands, except for blocking of course.

I'm confused about why you are doing this if you are kickboxing, or why you are even point sparring. You guys have figured out this little game. Kickboxing sparring is kickBOXING. Sounds to me like your instructor needs to take the training wheels off.

Good advice from the others here!

I do agree that you need variety in who your sparring. Most of the fighters in my club fight one way. A new guy just transfered into the club and fights very different from the rest of us! I love fighting him, even though I only have a few times. His style is so different and a challenge! So I'd try to find others to spar with so that you can get variety in how you fight.

External training without the training of the mind is nothing

baron, obviously you dont know what im trying to say. at my school, we do tkd, hkd, and kickboxing. for the tkd, we point spar. for kickboxing, we do continuous full contact. for the point sparring part, i keep getting scored on because i use my kicks too much and my opponent jams me up and rushes me. so, i thought i should work on my hands. i told my instructor that i want to use my hands more during point sparring so i dont get scored on so much and my opponents wont figure me out so easily. my instructor then came up with a drill that, while point sparring, only one person can use their hands, and the other person can only use their feet, so it kind of forces us to get good at using both.

Okay, thank you for the explanation. I wasn't sure from your list of styles since I'm not familiar with those names. I'm certainly no TKD expert; sounds like others have given some sound advice.
