Elky Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 I know i sound like an idiot asking this, but what are katas and kumite, etc?!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!? Kata are long strings of techniques performed in succession. e.g. this is a kata: Kumite is sparring (literally, "meeting of hands") - fighting practice
James Bullock Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Here is a very basic explanation.Kata... Formal TechniquesTraditionally Kata's contain prearranged self defense techniques that are combined into a kind of workout routine. On a higher level they represent the vital principles of movement, motion, energy, structural strength...etc. Bunkai... The breakdown or analysis of the Kata movements. The actual self defense techniques represented within the kata. Kumite... Free fighting..the use of basic movements within your system to "spar" with. Develops timing, distancing, broken rhythm, speed, reaction time and so on.
