Depends on the school. I was sparring(poorly) about a week or two after I started.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

At our club, you start by doing 1-for-1 where you take it in turns to use a technique. After a while you then can do semi-free where you take turns doing combos. I don't think we allow full free-sparring until about the 3rd or 4th belt. But that's up to the instructor to decide when a student is capable. Sometimes as a teaching point, higher grades free spar beginners but they are expected to take it down a level and allow the beginner to get a few shots in tp build up confidence.

At our school kids start sparring after 4-6 months, adults sooner if they choose.

In my Muay Thai class, we sparred lightly starting the second week. After about 6 weeks we went for our first full-contact matches of 2 minute rounds that don't stop unless there's a knockout or someone gives up. Knowing you're going to spar like that focuses you on paying attention in class as it draws closer.

My school does light sparring after about 6 weeks. At 9th kyu & above it is once a week.

If you think only of hitting, springing, striking or touching the enemy, you will not be able actually to cut him. You must thoroughly research this. - Musashi

in my school u dont start sparring until, u gain ur first sash, ( whit sash)

whuch i right after ur first test.

you must learn different combinations of techniques down to your very soul and they must come without thinking when you finish with one technique, you must immediately go into another until you have attained your goal which is to destroy the enemy.

After our first test from white belt to gold bar, we are allowed to spar. From there, sparring is a requirement to test for your next belt (yellow).
