We use the numberals system and have it on one side (supposed to wear it on the left) with our name.

Is there a reason why most belts. ones that I've seen anyway, are embroidered in gold? It does look nice but I was wondering whether there is an actual reason for it...

In my shotokan system gold lettering is reserved for nidan and above.

Shotokan/Daito Ryu - Plain black belt, no stripes or anything. Regardless of degree.

Chuan Fa- Plain black sash for bb, white fringe added for 1st degree, green fringe added for 2nd, brown fringe added for 3rd. All fringe removed and red fringe only is worn for 4th and above.

BJJ- Black belt with a red bar. 2 stripes are worn on it (one at either end of the bar) if you are an instructor. After that one stripe is added for each degree. *I am not a BJJ Black belt, just know the system used by Pedro Sauer/ Gracie Jiujitsu*

Also with BJJ, 9th and 10th degree is denoted by a solid red belt, which I believe only Helio and Carlos Gracie Sr. have.

I always thought it was interesting how BJJ awards red belts to their highest masters whilst in other styles red is usually used for a lower rank. Can anyone enlighten me as to why the Gracies chose the colour red?

It's based on Judo rank. In judo, red is not a lower rank. I forget where it sets, but it's somewhere around 5th degree. Actually, in many martial arts (karate and chuan fa that I've seen) red is usually reserved for high ranking experts. I think the Korean arts are more likely to have red as a rank that is lower than black belt.
