mbsushi
Ok, I need some assistance from the martial arts community. My Sensei has asked me to write a paper about the legal ramifications of using martial arts to defend ones self. I'm looking for someone with a legal background who I can email questions to that pertain to martial arts so I can write a paper about it. Anyone up for this? bushido_man96
First of all, welcome to KarateForums! As for your questions, you can find lots of information in these pages. If you do some searching, you can find many tidbits of personal experience relating to this subject. Here is what I recommend that you do, along with your other research:1. Interview your local Chief of Police, or whoever on the force you have access to, and ask questions for them, pertaining to what they would do when fights happen, and when someone gets severly hurt because one of the fighters was a Martial Artist.2. Interview a local Judge on the subject, the same you would do with the Police officer on the subject.3. You could also interview a few attorneys on the subject as well.I hope this helps. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
lordtariel
I think this should be a thing that more dojos include. It's just as important to know when to use your skills as it is on how to use them. Another option is to review your state's laws on self-defense, they should be online somewhere. It's a bit difficult to digest them, but not impossible. The best bet though is to do what Bushido suggested and contact the police and ask if you can do an interview with someone. mbsushi
Thank you both, everything your suggesting is helping. I agree that more dojos should add this sort of thing to their curriculum's. When to use Martial Arts, is just as important as the How. I still would like to find someone on this forum who has a law background that could assist me with this task. Reading legal documents on my State's law website is not simple at all. Perhaps someone can steer me in the right direction or provide me with some answers to my questions about self defense. lordtariel
Well, for starters, what state are you in? Or country for that matter. There's no place like 127.0.0.
marie curie
My fiance is just a few weeks from finishing law school- also he teaches my martial arts class, so I'll ask him if he has any thoughts for your paper. marie curie
He says to1. Understand the general laws of self-defense and the use of force2. Understand the specific provisions/statutes to his local/statejurisdiction (there's no federal law on this issue as best I know). ps1
Hello, Will you be able to share some of the highlights of your writings when done?I believe most of us are curious about this? .......AlohaThat's a great idea. You could even try to submit it as an article! Marie Curie is right. There are no federal laws on this. Your best bet is always going to be to contact someone locally. A judge would probably be your best bet as they have a strong knowledge of precident set in the past. btw...welcome to the forums.
