hammer
I think the reverse turning kick is the reverse hooking kick. Maybe? In the club that I go to, the reverse turn kick and reverse hook kick both involve spinning and kicking, but the reverse turn kick ends with a thrusting kick and the reverse hook kick ends up with -- you guessed it -- a hook kick.I like both kicks but my favorite is the reverse turn kick...very powerful and effective in sparring if done fast. The reverse hook kick is also great, but I don't have the flexibility to do it all that well so it's not in my arsenal...yet.
bushido_man96
In the organization I was in previously, a kick was a spin kick if the kicking leg (back leg) landed as it started, in the back. It was a reverse kick if you spun and kicked with the back leg, and the kicking leg landed in front.I think this categorization helps save some confusion. But that is just me. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com

KarateEd
This is kind of a funny thread to read, they way it has gone back and forth. Anyhow, bushido_man96, what you call a "reverse" kick I have always called a "spinning" kick, both in TSD and TKD. Funny how the terminology can vary. I do understand your definitions, though. That would depend on what my opponent's doing. I agree with Ottman. That being said, thinking of a kick that I like to thrown I am torn between the simple ol' side kick and a spinning (reverse is one uses bushido_man96's definition) back kick.Ed Ed

Most of that terminolgy comes from my time in the ATA. I still like to use it; I think it helps to differentiate things better. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
karatekid1975
In WTF TKD (or at least the style I'm in), a turning kick is a roundhouse kick. The reverse turning kick is a spinning hook kick. And what bushido_man96 said was a heel kick, we used to (in TSD) call it the wheel kick. Weird, huh? LOLI used to like spinning kicks, jump kicks, ect. But I can't get my legs up there anymore (lack of training), so I like any stationary kick (front, side, round, and back kicks). Eventhough my turning kick is terrible right now. I lost my V-stretch flexibility, so I kick low now. If I want to get it higher, I have to force my hips to rotate more, and it hurts for some reason. marie curie
I like a good snapping side kick.I think that I would prefer low roundhouses if I didn't have such pansy shins. bushido_man96
actually, Its not very useful, but my best kick is a jumping spinning cresent.Don't just say that it isn't useful. You just have to use it in the right place.Try this: the next time you are sparring, feint, draw, or do whatever to get you opponent throw a back leg round kick. As they throw the kick, do your jump spin cresent kick as a counter. Here is the important variation....your jump is not high...instead, you barley come off of the floor, doing a "switching foot" motion, instead of jumping. You should get some use out of that. Let me know how it goes! https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
