Kyle-san Posted September 10, 2002 Posted September 10, 2002 I don't have too much of a problem paying a reasonable fee to test (say, $25 or 35). However, I've found some students look at like "I've payed my money, now I get my belt." which is often the case in certain schools. Of course, I've just had a few bad experiences.
amp Posted October 5, 2002 Posted October 5, 2002 I see nothing wrong with belts, as long as people don't place too much emphasis on them. You mean like going so far as to use belt graphics in a forum? Ha ha, only kidding. Please don't edit me Even if a system doesn't have belts, it usually still has rankings. I used to dislike belts but have grown to appreciate them purely for logical progression of skill and technique. Other than that, a belt just holds your pants up. Know thyself.
ZeRo Posted October 5, 2002 Posted October 5, 2002 i think belts are a good idea coz they show firstly roughly how long a person has been training and roughly how good they are. its a good indication.
LeaF Posted October 5, 2002 Posted October 5, 2002 they also give you short term goals to work towards, as someone mentioned above Goju Ryu Karate-do and Okinawan Kobudo, 17 Years Old 1st kyu Brown Belt in in Goju Ryu Karate-do, & Shodan in Okinawan KobudoGiven enough time, any man may master the physical. With enough knowledge, any man may become wise. It is the true warrior who can master both....and surpass the result.I AM CANADIAN
KU Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 In some cases the belt system can be a scam, seeing $500 black belt grading is a bit much especialy if the money goes straight in someones poket. In our dojo grading costs decrease the higher you get making all dan grade tests free.(Why should all the people who have put in all the blood and swet have to produce the big wods of cash). As many others have said the belt system has it's advantages allowing mainly the sensai to tell what level you are at however, (IMO) once you reach black belt thats where it should stop, I know at a very advanced level red, red and white is use (among others) and this I think is warented as they are reserved for very high level martial artists, but below that I think that just a black belt is enough to have all of these gold bars is a bit much and a bit egotistical. I have probably stepped on some toes with that one but remember this is IMO and hence my signature. - Only by contrast can we see.- Each for his own.
ZeRo Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 they also give you short term goals to work towards, as someone mentioned above how could i forget that . i think the short term goal is the biggest point about belts (although for me 7 months isnt short term) you need a goal when your young.
koreantiger81 Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 belts are ok...If a martial arts system has many belts to get to black-belt, then I say it's a scam...I've seen systems with 17 belts... Kinesiologist/TrainerBlack-Belt
monkeygirl Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 Pay?? For testing?? If you pay for testing, what would stop a greedy school owner from failing you to get you to pay for another test? 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
aes Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 I pay $75 a year for membership, plus about 55 a month general fees, plus $5 per stipe test, plus a sliding upwards scale for belt test. I think lower belts are $15. This is all cdn dollars. I can currently go to up to 5 classes a week for this price (all the slots offered) In which 3 of them are 1.25 hour classes and 2 are .75 hours long. I think honour and the reputation of ths school keeps the Dojo in line with being fair IMO. Al 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
aes Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 A black belt test at my school takes supposedly 8 hours. I do not know how much the cost is though. Al 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
