Mo_Tseu Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 I think the major reason why there is belts is to make more money on our case. The price to take courses is high enough, in my region, it's around 800 $can to be in and 100$can for the belt exam. It's #$^&*% insane, don't you guys and girls agree with me ?? :kaioken: :kaioken: Wing Chun Kung Fu (Yip Man) andKali (Pekiti Tersia) martial artist (no belts needed)
Withers M.A.A. Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 I've always paid $30 per test. That includes the test itself, the belt, and the certificate. I don't think its a scam. It gives p eople short term goals instead of just having one promotion in 4-6 years. Lau gar Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 it's good for us but i gotta admit it's where my school gats most of it's money blue belt Lau Gar Kung fu"know your enemy"
ZeRo Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 my belt tests aint to bad because im a mini person. 13 years old and i only have ot pay about £15 for my tests
ckdstudent Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 We only pay £20 a test until black belt. Then it gets expensive, mainly because when you get to black belt you'll pay whatever they ask. Of course, retests come free. Personally I'm quite proud of having a first dan belt after ten years, and being only a year away from my second. It just indicates to me how far I've come since I started, plus it looks very nice what with the gold bar and my name embroidered upon it. ---------Pil SungJimmy B
Phantasmatic Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 Mo Tseu, I think those people you are talking about are just getting ripped off!! IMHO i think the only reason to have belts is to know where the students are at in his/her training so the sensei can tell faster. tessone Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 I see nothing wrong with belts, as long as people don't place too much emphasis on them. They provide short term goals while you're still in the process of learning the basics. At our school, all color belt tests are less than $50. I think the prices might even be standard throughout KSW, but I'm not 100% sure. Testing from 1st dan and up is a lot more expensive, but once you're a black belt, you're considered a senior student and the idea is you have an important role in building up the organization. That makes a lot of sense to me. Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
Pacificshore Posted May 21, 2002 Posted May 21, 2002 I don't necessarily think so. I've seen places that charge a rising scale for belt test, but charge students a reasonable amount for monthly lessons. For example, $50-$60 a month for lessons, and then $25, $30, $35, $40, etc. per belt level. Then there are those places that charge you plenty up front for a belt program, membership, and still a monthly fee, but then only charge a minimum amount for all belt testing, up until 1st degree black. In the end it's about how you preceive your training to be and what you look to gain from it. Di'DaDeeeee!!!Mind of Mencia
Kung Fu grunger Posted May 22, 2002 Posted May 22, 2002 at my old club we didn't pay for the tests to move up a a belt, the club just uses the belt system as a tracking system to see how good you are It's not good enough to think you can can do it you have to actually do it!!--Jason (black red black belt in Kung fu)--
Karateka Posted May 22, 2002 Posted May 22, 2002 I sometimes found the prices were too high, and then I saw other clubs, and they were even more expensive. Usually, my belt tests cost about $20 a test. Then the black belt test comes from Japan so it is about $200 dollars. Plus we have monthly fees, association fees and style fees. It gets a little carried away. I always find the rewards to be greater than what I give, so it is, to me anyway, a good trade off.
