SBN Doug Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Wow, how did I miss this thread?Yes, cane is a mandatory part of the Kuk Sool Won curriculim. Between it and rope, thay are probably the two most practical weapons we study. Lots of hooking, locking, and choking techniques using the cane (even a couple that are a little more painful).Definately something I enjoy have practice in, as I may too some day need something as well (but not for a loooong time ). Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.
Hakutsuru Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I've been working with a cane off and on since 2005. It's an excellent legal weapon for any martial artist to work with. Just remember it is a stick, use it like one...the hook on the end is good for tricks but it's really just a stick.
Zaine Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I feel like that comment takes away a lot of the legitimacy of the cane, which isn't probably what you were going for but it's what it comes across as. I personally love the hook part of the cane, it's what I think makes it unique and not just another stick. That's like saying the nunchauku are just two small pieces of wood, when they are so much more if you know what to do with them. Hakutsuru Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Try some stick sparring with a cane. Pad up, wear a helmet and use the crook. Let us know how that goes.
yamesu Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Having trained in SE asian stick fighting arts (Arnis) for some time, i have found that the techniques translate directly to a cane and umbrella. Especially useful for assisting locks (shoulder and elbow holds and chokes), and for disarming techniques.Ive never had to use one, nor have I ever trained exclusively in any style which has a "Cane" syllabus, but the similarity between short-sticks is definitely there. If nothing else, though, the hook would help keep the stick from being pulled from your grasp as easily. My fists bleed death. -Akuma

In these they do note that not all canes have hooks... I guess it is a personal preference thing.I would be very interested to see some specifics of using the hook end against another armed attacker. If anyone has a link or video of classes/training please do post! "We did not inherit this earth from our parents. We are borrowing it from our children."
Dobbersky Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 I have also been in thought as to how I missed this thread. I have a Cane, which I walk around with to become accustomed to its presence. I see so much in its use but need to find a Le Canne Instructor to teach atleast the basics that trying the "teach yourself" stuffSo glad I found this post "Challenge is a Dragon with a Gift in its mouth....Tame the Dragon and the Gift is Yours....."
