baronbvp Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 I just returned from my first night of JKD. It was great. I have been doing Muay Thai and was considering adding BJJ, but I like the setup at this place: http://www.completefitnessconcepts.com/The head instructor is in his 40's like me. We share similar philosophies and I like the environment and the people who train there. They do kickboxing, ground fighting/submission grappling, trapping, kali/weapons, and even Tai Chi. The integration of all these disciplines and more, wrapped together with Bruce Lee's philosophy of each person developing their own martial art, is very attractive.Does anybody else have stories to share about JKD? What they like and don't like at their dojo/school or in their system? Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.Martial arts are like kinetic chess. Your move.
bushido_man96 Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Sounds cool, Baron, and it looks like they offer quite a bit of stuff. I hope you enjoy your training there. So, are you done with the Muay Thai school, then? The only experience I have with JKD is reading Lee's book, The Tao of Jeet Kune Do. It is a great book, with loads of information. Lee truly was a student of the arts (or no arts, however you want to look at it). https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
baronbvp Posted March 2, 2007 Author Posted March 2, 2007 I have two more classes, but I'm having some minor surgery on Mon so I will be unable to spar. I'm tired of training in bare feet on a laminate floor, so I will observe the last two classes and that will be it. We do some MT at the JKD school. I still may take the BJJ and MT classes at the other school I found, but I will wait and see how this JKD school goes. It includes ground fighting, so I may just stick with it alone. I may still take a fencing class, but then this JKD place also does weapons - kali and modern. It's all good - literally. NightOwl Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Baronbvp! You gotta settle down someday young man! Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.~Theodore Roosevelt
baronbvp Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 Yeah baby! I am now reading Sam Sheridan's new book, A Fighter's Heart. He confirms it - Muay Thai is a young person's sport. Don't I know it! But I like it.Now I'm just trying to find my happy place. PS - Congrats on the digital blue belt and cool new avatar. cross Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Thanks brother. I think so too. Much more my style.Do you think you will continue muay thai aswell?
baronbvp Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 I have four more Muay Thai classes through the county park system before the course ends. I just dropped the next MT and BJJ classes I was signed up for because I couldn't do it all, and the JKD looks more attractive. Once my sons are done with their swimming lessons in May, it should free up another two nights/week. (I'm also taking ballroom dancing with my wife to get ready for my next job. Really!) As summer arrives I may sign up for BJJ and MT again, or for fencing which I love and miss. If the JKD submission grappling isn't enough, I'll take at least the BJJ class to get a baseline from which to train.I've never had this many options before. It's quite amazing. Being 45 and having a life, I have to have some nights off, too. Here's my current sked if I did everything I'm signed up for right now:Mon JKD and weaponsWed Muay Thai (twice more), then JKD submission grappling/ground fightingThurs JKDSat Muay Thai (twice more), then JKD sparring. Ballroom dancing at night. This doesn't include the classes my sons and wife are each taking. Whew! Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.Martial arts are like kinetic chess. Your move.
