In European fighting styles, often times the quarterstaff was learned first, as many of its concepts would transfer to other weapons, i.e., the spear.

Just about any of the attacks and defenses of the quarterstaff will translate to the spear. The staff even has thrusting attacks. It is correct to say that the spear may be a bit more complex, but they still have many similarities. The spear may be longer, but the concepts still remain.

As for throwing the weapon, there were specially designed spears for throwing......they are called javelins.

Hello, From what I understand...you can carry a long stick (bo) in most states. A spear may give you some trouble if caught carrying it around.

There are alot of older folks who goes walking, carrying a golf club...this works for keeping possible trouble makers away.

So if you need to carry something for protection? Golf clubs...legal everywhere in America. (Not on a plane or in the airports).

I like the the 8 iron! for balls? bright ones! (If you bowl?..carry a pin? )

If you carry a bat? ..just make sure you have a glove and a ball too..this way if you go to court...you will look more innocent!

For spearfisherman ....if you live near the ocean....most likely you can carry them spears around without to much troubles...BUT if you use it to spear someone? ....this could be a different story.

Here in Hawaii for Ulua fishing we use 9oz lead weigths...carry these in you pockets for throwing objects...would hurt you, and not against the law.

Jump ropes are legal to carry anywhere too? ...whose says it cannot be made of chains, heavy ropes, or whip (there could be a law on carry chains).

spear or bo ........the weight and size of a bo ( I believe NO laws on carrying). Spears? ....maybe treated differently......Aloha

PS: It is the person who knows how to use the tools (spear or bo)...can cause a lot of damages...
