krozor Posted May 17, 2002 Posted May 17, 2002 Hi all I have been doing Ishinryu karate for about 5 weeks(2 hours a week) and this monday I have to perform my first kata in front of the class. The problem is that I was shown the kata twice by one of the other students performing it but I still can't do it correct and seem to forget what I have to do. I really want to perform the kata well on monday but without knowing what the kata is called or finding any info online I can't practice. Can anyone tell me what the first kata might be called or a website showing me the steps to performing it. Thank-you
spinninggumby Posted May 17, 2002 Posted May 17, 2002 I'm not familiar with Ishinryu at all much less the katas, but I am sure that for someone who has only been training for five weeks, you are doing just fine as long as you try your best and you are showing a lot of concern for improvement and details So far so good as far as I can tell 'Conviction is a luxury for those on the sidelines'William Parcher, 'A BEAUTIFUL MIND'
SaiFightsMS Posted May 17, 2002 Posted May 17, 2002 Can you describe the first group of moves in the kata? Does the name Seisan ring a bell? http//https://www.isshinryu.com/index.htm _________________ KarateForums Sempai Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-05-17 17:39 ]
krozor Posted May 18, 2002 Author Posted May 18, 2002 The name Seisan does not ring a bell sorry.. I do remeber that the first move is a left downward punch. You body is facing forward i think and the punch is at a angle facing your knee kinda. Hope this helps.
SaiFightsMS Posted May 18, 2002 Posted May 18, 2002 Turn to the left and down block. Continuing to the left step and punch. 180 degree turn and down block. Continuing to the right step and punch. Turn to the front and down block. Step and punch 3 times? Ring a bell?
G95champ Posted May 18, 2002 Posted May 18, 2002 If SaifightsMS is right the kata is Taikyoku Shodan from Shotokan. The first Heian Kata starts much the same as well with the escape added. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
SaiFightsMS Posted May 19, 2002 Posted May 19, 2002 Many styles add introductory kata that are not traditonally part of their styles cirriculum. Actually the beginning I described is know by 5 or 6 different names. It is practiced by many styles.
krozor Posted May 19, 2002 Author Posted May 19, 2002 Thanks for everybodys help From what people have have posted I would guess the kata is Heian shodan. It sounds right including the moves and the way the kata starts. I have done some research and will do some basic pratice. Hopefully all will be cool tomorrow.. Thanks again
tessone Posted May 19, 2002 Posted May 19, 2002 Good luck, krozor! And welcome to the forums, by the way. Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
SaiFightsMS Posted May 19, 2002 Posted May 19, 2002 Krozor come back and tell us how it went. Heian katas are not generally practiced in Isshinryu.
