stejitsu Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Before receiving my 1st degree in WC, i also held a 1st Dan in jiu jitsu. I used to train at a goju school and the instructor said i was equal to his Dan graded students and said i should wear my black belt.Self defence & fighting style was the same, apart from the lack of katas. So my 'jiu jitsu' Dan grade, in senseis eyes was equivalent to his 'goju ryu' students levels & skills. The BB of C Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 What does it mean when you have a black belt equvalent? Can someone please explain this to me?I would think generally it means you're as powerful as a typical, what most people would think to be a "black belt."
baronbvp Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I could outfight some of the younger black belts at my old shorin ryu dojo, but I would never presume to let someone declare me a black belt equivalent, even if it was a kata thing. No way, no how. You have to earn that baby. The old guys would have knocked me out in a second. Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.Martial arts are like kinetic chess. Your move.

What I think is the most interesting is that we would perhaps use the "black belt equivalent" to describe someone from the fighting arts like boxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling, that don't use a rank system. However, the competitors of those sports would probably be less likely to use such a descriptor themselves. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
