Well, before we get too carried away, remember that left over right applies to everyone's clothing... Not everyone was a samurai and not everyone carried weapons... Like I said, it stemmed from imitating the Chinese rather than any practical weapons considerations. The Japanese samurai adapted to this practice, not the other way around.

Very true. It is more of a Chinese tradition, that each culture has made their own, and adapted it for different reasons.

thanks for the participation guys. its pretty cool to see that something as simple as our uniforms has a whole history and purpose behind it. once again, thanks for the theoies... some pretty interesting ones out there.
