aigaios Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 I've been away from my school for over a month. I left 'cause I had some physical problems to sort out, and I didn't really agree with the mentality of the place... They had me teaching for 36 hours a week for a good 8 months, not including the summer camp, without paying me anything, and kept stringing me on about becoming a paid instructor. Should I put up with this? And do all schools do this kind of stuff to their underlings? Thanks for your replies,-aigaios Cho Dan Hapkidoist and trickster.
bushido_man96 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 The answer here is pretty simple. If you don't want to go back, then don't. If you didn't like how they treated you, then you should go look elsewhere. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
lordtariel Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 If you want to go back, make sure you get something in writing before you start. If someone was stringing me along like that though, I'd probably find somewhere else. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 thats like a full time job, phew all them hours per week and no returns... would style is it, it's not one of the McDojos is it ?????
ps1 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 If it looks shady, and feels shady, and smells shady...then it's shady. I wouldn't go back. But maybe talking to the instructor about it would help clear the air. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
aefibird Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Talk to the instructor and tell him about how unhappy you are at being used as free labour. Tell him you will come back and are willing to teach if you will get something in return, whether that is actual cash or payment-in-kind, such as free lessons. If he fobs you off or makes excuses then you know he just wants you to work for nothing, so the best thing would be to find somewhere else. No one is forcing you to go there - you should be happy in your training and if you are not happy then it is a good sign that you should find another school.Good luck with whatever you do! aigaios Posted January 17, 2007 Author Posted January 17, 2007 Thanks for the replies, guys...And to 2007, no, it's not a McDojo. The quality of instruction is high, and you have to earn your belts. However, sometimes it feels like it's being run like a McDojo. Also to Aefibird, they did give me free lessons, but instead of being like 2 hours of teaching for an hour of class, it was like 6 or 7 hours per class... Cho Dan Hapkidoist and trickster.
Muki Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Sounds to me like they were exploiting you... Like 2007 said: that's like a ful time job! Can I ask you why don't you just train (without teaching classes)? If you're going trough hell, keep going. | http://www.sankukai.org
aigaios Posted January 18, 2007 Author Posted January 18, 2007 ^You know, you have a point. The main reason was that I wanted to be a certified instructor in the IHF. But the secondary one was that I wanted the job. Cho Dan Hapkidoist and trickster.

But the secondary one was that I wanted the job. There are many schools that will require higher ranks to do some teaching from time to time as a requirement for their rank. However, that many hours seems a bit extreme. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
