Hi guys, I have a few questions about Highschool wrestling that I wonder if any of you can answer...

I have a brown belt in Jujitsu, and I was wondering if i'm allowed any submissions (Rear-naked choke, Triangle Choke, etc.) or joint locking holds like armbars or kimuras in competition.

from what I understand it's point scoring, practice starts in a month so i'm just wondering what to expect. I'd favor tap outs more than point scoring..

I'm sure that your Jujitsu will give you an edge, but don't expect to wipe the floor with everyone. Matches are usually won by pins; and joint locks, chokes, etc are BIG no-nos. Having said that, it should help you alot on your takedowns (as Greco-roman has some nice practical ones) and thus should complement you Jujitsu nicely. Good luck!

Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

No chokes, or locks? :(

Oh well, thanks for letting me know in advance!

Any other comments are welcome.

High school wrestling will be a great compliment to your jujitsu training, I believe. You will learn takedowns, as was mentioned, and although there is not a lot of locking and choking, you will still learn some very good moves that you can use to manipulate your opponents.

It is a fun sport, and the conditioning is excellent. One difference you will notice is that you will be constantly trying to pin your opponent, by putting him on his back and holding him there. You will quickly learn that being on the bottom is bad for a wrestler, which may take some adjustments to get used to.

Have fun, and good luck with it! Keep us posted as to how you do. :karate:

Ace, holding the opponent's shoulders on the floor for a pin is the goal. You'll need to learn not to be flipped on your back, whereas being on the bottom on your stomach is okay. Some of the starts are from your knees; some of the techniques you know will help you learn the reversals from that position and others. You already know what leverage does, so you'll be well ahead of many of the other students who are just learning. Just be careful not to hurt guys, and remember to keep at least one of your shoulder blades off the mat. Good luck and have fun.

Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.
