looking for a style

Recommended Posts

i dont want this to be a post where people say that one martial art is better than the other. i just wanna post some info about me and get some recommendations about what martial arts would be best for someone like me to pursue.

im 6'2" 220lbs. im not very flexible but im strong, im heavy handed, i got a really strong core from boxing and i got good endurance. i prefer a more offensive kind of martial art. i was looking into kyokushinkai so far, but i wasnt able to find anyplace around where i live that teaches that style. any suggestions?

You really would benefit from any Martial Art, but it sounds like you may love a grappling art. Look around for any Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes. Good luck.

A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.

I would recomend muay thai. It was nicknamed the deadly art. Also called thai boxing as you probably already know. It is very tough and requires body tuning(making your bones stronger and ignore the pain) I myself would like kung fu, but you have to be pretty flexible and it is more speed than strength. :kaioken:

the best fight is one that doesnt happen

yesss i really want to learn how to condition my bones so anything with that i would enjoy, as for what im trying to achieve, i kind of want to be a competitor in whichever i do, i want to be able to use whatever i learn a lot. as for whats in my area, there isnt much, i think there is taekwondo, jujitsu, shaolin do and a few others. so far im really interested in kyokushinkai and im going on a serious hunt to find a place around here where i can get into it. does anyone have any additional infor on kyokushinkai? or would like to suggest or add anything else? thanks

Flexibity can be developed. Your size really doesn't limit you to any particular style. Find out what's available in your area & take the free class. Off the top of my head, Kung Fu styles that are offensive minded are: Choy Lay Fut, Fu Jow Pai, Wing Chun, Hung-Ga & Hsing-I.

I will add that although while your young it seems like a great idea to condition your body to be strong and put your body through alot of pain and ignore it, but eventually it will catch up with you. Injuries that didnt seem so bad when you were young, getting punched and kicked in the body and head etc. In the long term you wont be doing yourself any favours. And keep in mind that the people training you will be more than happy to take your money and show you how to do all this "hardcore" training, but they probably wont be in your life in 10 or 20 years when the problems will start. And they are not the ones that will have to deal with the short and long term punishment.

If you feel some urge to do this kind of thing, i would suggest the same rule for most things in life.... all in moderation.
