Sotokan Federations

Gabriel

Recommended Posts

Hi. I used to practice Shotokan a few years ago and my dojo was affiliated to SKIF (Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation), and actually I participated in a some tournaments organized by that federation, and I got my 8th Kyu certificate guaranteed by SKIF.

Now I wanna go back to Shotokan, but I found some Dojos affiliated to ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Federation).

Anyone knows if SKIF became ISKF, or if they are different federations?

Greetings

No, ISKF has been founded with that name for well over 25 years... All though I never belonged to the ISKF, they are a great organization and have some great karate-kas to train with. I wouldn't hesitate a moment to train with this organization. The current Shotokan rank you are at woudln't make a bit of difference training with the ISKF.

Many, Many moons ago, the ISKF, AAKF, and JKA use to be the same group of people. I trained with many of them in the past and they are a great bunch of guys/gals...

From what I have heard and read, all of the affiliations mentioned are fairly reputatble.

Welcome to KF, Gabriel! :karate: I hope your training goes well.

like miller said, having an 8th kyu would not be something that would take a whole lot of deliberation to honour for another organization.... im pretty sure that they will do it, and if you think that it is a good club, it may be worth starting over if thats what they think must happen because you will grade quickly back to your former grade anyways

Brown belt... win trophies... grade... lose trophies... so much fun

Then I'll get into one of those Dojos.

I already had a little talk with a ISKF Sensei and he told me I don't need to start over. I can retake my yellow belt and train to get orange one.

Thanks a lot Killer Miller, bushido_man96, obiwansbane for your orientation.

This seems like a nice forum, I'll often be visiting and posting.

Hi there, i train in an SKIF club and its great. I dont think the federation you join doesn't matter that much as long as the sensei is good. I have competed in a few JKA tournaments and they have some very talented fighters, the small differences in the way they fight give me another angle to work on in my kumite. Its a good idea to fight in open tournaments and nex year it is one of my resolutions to compete in a few more and hopefully gain in confidence and technique ready for the bigger tournaments later in the year and next year.

Good Luck...Oss!

Half empty or half full?

I hope you didn't think we were saying that SKIF is not up to standards - because that is not what we were implying. He/she was just stating that there were no SKIF dojos and was curious about the ISKF organization for it's lagitimacy.
