b3n
It's all about your attitude. You have to be able to motivate yourself and strive to become a better martial artist. Know that you have to push yourself if you want to become better. If you find yourself sitting back during kumite you need to get angry at yourself, its the only way you will progress. Remember, plain and simple, defence cannot win you a fight. Either on the street or in the dojo, if you are not on the offense and are just trying to defend everything that is thrown at you, you are going to lose. You know what they say, offense is your best defence.-ben. My Nidan Grading! elbows_and_knees
that's not true. there are a lot of very successful boxers, thai boxers, etc. that are defensive counterfighters. different fighters have different styles.
elbows_and_knees
aggressive music - from gangsta rap to death metal - helps alot. Also, train more intensely, with more contact training - hard sparring, more heavy bag work, etc. make a conscious effort to become more agressive in your sparring- work on aggression oriented things, like attacking in combinations and countering instead of just passive blocking. BUT, you have to be careful, because - IME at least - aggression is all inclusive. You will become more aggressive in sparring, but you will also tend to be more aggressive in every day life. In some cases this is a good thing. however, if that's not what you want, you can counteract it in various ways, for example, meditation, if you are one to meditate. one thing u gotta remember though, is when u are training against someone, they are in the shoes of someone who really wants to cause u physical harm... dont got too lightly thinking that its just a make believe situation... u have to train as if it was real... become more of a conversationalist get to know everyone in ure club to the point where if u hit them hard by mistake they wont think anything of it cause ure friends now... this will allow u to train harder because both of u will not mind a few bruises seeing as u wouldve gained so much regardless of how you train, you are still training. No amount of make believe will make it any more real. Period. The adrenal stresses between a real fight and training in the dojo cannot be compared at all. When you are training with someone, they are NOT in the shoes of someone who is trying to harm you - they are in the shoes of a training partner. If they were in the shoes of an assailant, you would KO them instead of just going hard, break bones instead of letting them tap...you would run out of training partners and have many lawsuits. Training hard is one thing, but training as if it's a real fight is different. Even if you agree, the bumps and bruises you receive will take recovery, which slows training time, as there would be a longer interval between sparring sessions. In addition, no matter how much conversation you do with people in your class, not everyone likes hard contact. Consequently, hitting a person hard who does not want to spar hard will be ill received.

Sensei Tom OBrien
In Japanese it's called 'fudoshin'. Fudoshin means determination. It also means complete & total commitment. You have to believe that what you are going to do is going to succeed no matter what. For instance, if you are going to kick using a side kick (yoko geri) you have to drive that kick into your opponents opening so fast and so strong that you will knock him out of the ring even if he blocks it. The same goes for the reverse punch (gyaku zuki). You have to punch with everything you have in you. You can do both of these techniques with a fake or a back fist (riken uchi) or without either. Unfortunately there is only one way you can reach this level and that means repetitions. You have to do these techniques thousands of times with & without opponents. This ties into ‘Iken Itatsu’ or ‘one strike, one kill’. This is the essence of the art of karate. I could go on & on but I will not subject you guys to this old mans’ rantings. Thanks,Sensei Tom

baronbvp
You want to eat your opponent. Physically EAT him! Reach into his chest, pull out his heart and SNACK on it like a juicy, ripe mango. He just killed your dog, man! That guy disses Santa!! HE HATES BEER AND CHICKS AND FOOTBALL!!!!Don't forget to shake his hand afterward. Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.Martial arts are like kinetic chess. Your move.
holytriforce
Im sorry man i just cant help you on that one. I have a problem with it myslef, but i guess you could syce yourself out or something.I think you have to go balls out believe that he killed your mom or what ever just get ANGRY. Believe that you hate him and think to yourself if im not aggresive ill get hit, i think playing some tackle football will help you with this problem. If your not aggresive you will get demolished, this is how I got over this problem being in football as a freshman. hope it works for you? =]
